ANNLYSIS OH DIVISIONAL CHART(VEDIC ASTROLOGY)
What Are Divisional Charts?
Divisional charts are charts that are created by dividing each sign into a number of sections, and then assigning a sign to each slice, and then placing planets into a new chart based upon which sign they occupy in the section.
For example, the most important and most widely used divisional chart is called the Navamsha.
Nava means nine, and so each sign is divided into nine sections.
In the above diagram, the 30o of Aries is divided into 9 sections, starting with the sign Aries itself. Each wedge is 30o ÷ 9 = 3o 20' of arc. For example, if any planet in a birth chart is at 4o of Aries, it will be in the Taurus slice of the 9 sections, and that planet will be placed in Taurus in
the Navamsha chart.
In Vedic astrology, many divisions are used, each to indicate specific themes in a person's life.
Divisional charts are also called Varga charts, Amsha charts, sub-charts, and D-charts.
Part Two: The Most Commonly Used Divisional Charts.
1. The Navamsha D9 (9 sections) has many uses, but is most often used to indicate the events and tone of ones partner and their relationship with them.
[Reminder on the Vedic approach: if a planet is poorly placed in a divisional chart, then during its dasa, something becomes amiss. For the Navamsha, it could be that there are conflicts with the spouse, or it might mean that there is not enough time spent with the spouse, or that the spouse is wrestling with difficulties of some sort in their own lives. In any case, the problems seldom continue during the whole dasa because once the issues are confronted and dealt with, the pattern can change.]
2. The Drekkana D3 (3 sections) is the second most important divisional chart. Its main themes are siblings and general happiness.
3. There are four divisional chart that deal with money and career. The Hora (2 sections) is not very commonly used, and we will not discuss it here.
The Chaturamsha D4 (4 sections) is used both for assessing the buying and selling of major assets (like a home) and for issues around major sums of money (e.g. inheritances, big investments, etc.)
The Dasamsha D10 (10 sections) represents the themes around career and work.
The Ekadasamsha D11 (11 sections) is a special case. It is a Tajika divisional chart (meaning it came to Vedic astrology late in the game, probably from the West) and there are very different methods of calculating it, and interpreting it,depending upon what school of astrology you subscribe to.
I was taught to use the Iyer method of calculation, and to use the D11 for two purposes:
A. To assess the flow of income in a person's life.
B. To see when and if a person is likely to receive an honor, and if so, for what. This is the only time in divisional chart analysis where each house's themes are emphasized. E.g. if a person is running the dasa of a planet in its own sign in the 5th house of the D11, they will receive honors for their discernment, mentoring, or creativity (5th house themes) or their child will receive an honor.
4. There are three divisional chart concerned with health. If a person is running the dasa of a planet poorly placed in all three of these charts, they should pay special heed to their health.
The Shashtamsha D6 (6 sections) and the Ashtamsha (8 sections) are both Tajika divisional charts, like the D11 mentioned above.
The Shashtamsha indicates health issues specifically, more than other divisional charts.
The Ashtamsha D8 (8 sections) indicates major challenges and crises in a person's chart, including the deaths of those close to them.
The Bhamsha D27 (27 sections) indicates general vitality, and the ability to rise to the occasion.
Note: as the number of sections increases, the need for a precise birth time does too. A D27 chart can often change if the birth time is off by a few minutes.
5. There are four "family" divisional charts: the Navamsha and Drekkana, already mentioned, and these:
The Saptamsha D7 (7 sections) indicates matters with ones children (or in the absence of progeny, the prosperity of the spouse).
The Dwadashamsha D12 (12 sections) indicates parental themes.
6. There are two "spiritual" divisional charts.
The Panchamsha D5 (5 sections) shows the inner spiritual nature and ethics.
The Vimshamsha D20 (20 sections) shows spiritual practices and affiliations.
7. The Siddhamsha D24 (24 sections) covers themes of education and training.
Part Three: Methods of Evaluating Divisional Charts.
Many Vedic astrologers interpret divisional charts using the same methods as they use in evaluating birth charts. I have been taught to evaluate divisional charts using the method introduced by Sheshadri Iyer and explicated by Hart de Fouw.
In this method, the primary emphasis is upon dynamic analysis, i.e. evaluating the placement of the dasa lord in each of the D-charts, and thereby determining how the theme of each D-chart will go during the planet's dasa. There are a few static analysis principles used in this approach too.
Part Four: Static Analysis Methods.
1. Karako Bhavo Nashya in D-charts. The placement of the significator of a person in the First House of the D-chart that represents the person. This is only relevant for the family divisional charts mentioned above.
Venus in the First House in the D9 (Spouse)
Jupiter in the First House in the D7 (Child)
Either Mars or Jupiter in the First House of the D3 (Younger or older sibling, respectively)
Either the Sun or the Moon in the First House of the D12 (Dad or Mom, respectively)
Divisional Charts Page 3
The principle is: if any of the above situations occur, then there will be an increased level of difficulties for the person indicated in general (although even more so during that planet's dasa).
The weaker the planet is in the relevant D-chart, the more accentuated the difficulties will be.
2. The D-charts First House. The more planets that occupy or aspect a divisional chart's First House, the more active and alive the theme is. This is generally valuable.
3. Vargottama Lagnas and the strength of the D-charts Lagnesa. If the Ascendant in a
divisional chart is in the same sign as the Ascendant of the birth chart, this is very positive for the themes of that D-chart. If the ruler of that sign is strong and in a positive house in the D-chart, much will manifest positively, while if that chart ruler is weak and in a negative, very little will result.
Part Five: Dynamic Analysis, Section One: Placement
Whether the themes of a D-chart will go well or poorly depends primarily on the placement of the Dasa Lord in each D-chart.
The 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 10th houses are positive.
The 2nd and 11th houses are neutral (mildly positive).
The 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 12th houses are negative.
The Moon, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are benefics.
The Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are malefics.
There are six pair of companion houses:
1 + 7
2 + 12
3 + 11
4 + 10
5 + 9
6 + 8
The four primary rules for assessing placement in each D-chart:
1. If a benefic is in a positive house, its dasa goes well. (If there is any planet in its companion house, it goes even better.)
2. If a benefic is in a negative house, its dasa goes poorly
2b -- unless there is a planet in its companion house, in which case it goes well.
3. If a malefic is in a negative house, its dasa goes poorly. (If there is any planet in its companion house, it goes even worse.)
4. If a malefic is in a positive house, its dasa goes well
4b -- unless there is a planet in its companion house, in which case it goes poorly.
Note: if Rahu is in one angle opposite to Ketu, and no other planets are in either house, then both Rahu and Ketu dasas go well for the themes of the D-chart.
Part Five: Dynamic Analysis, Section Two: Strength
How well one deals with the themes that arise depends upon the strength of the Dasa Lord.
There are four possible extremes:
1. Strong Lord + Positive Placement: Themes thrive and are made the most of.
2. Strong Lord + Negative Placement: Challenges arise but are well met.
3. Weak Lord + Positive Placement: Themes are good but it's hard to make the most of them.
4. Weak Lord + Negative Placement: Challenges arise and are difficult to handle.
Part Six: Exceptions Modifying Good and Bad Placements
There are many exceptions that modify the assessment of positive or negative placement. It is wise to learn them gradually. We will review the most important exceptions and modifying influences.
A. Frequent Exceptions:
1. Sole Enemies. If a planet is in the same house as, or aspected by, its sole enemy, and if that sole enemy is strong, then during the planet's dasa the themes indicated will be detrimented.
6 Jupiter is the sole enemy of Venus 4
7 Saturn is the sole enemy of the Sun 1
3 Mercury is the sole enemy of the Moon 2
= Ketu is the sole enemy of Mars 5
4 Venus is the sole enemy of Rahu -
1 The Sun is the sole enemy of Jupiter 6
2 The Moon is the sole enemy of Saturn 7
A way to remember: the enemy of a planet is always the one six planets down in the dasa listing.
2. The redeemer. For all planets except Venus, if Jupiter is strong and is in the same house as or aspects the dasa lord, it helps greatly to ameliorate its bad placement. If a strong Venus and strong Mercury or strong Venus and strong Moon aspect the dasa lord, they can also ameliorate
its bad placement.
3. Yogas in the Birth Chart. When one or more yogas, representing a specific area of life or life theme (e.g. success in career) are present in the birth chart and are formed by one or more strong planets then the yogas can supercede divisional chart evaluations for that theme.
E.g. If someone has one or more strong yogas in the 10th house, then even when they run the dasa of a planet poorly placed in their D10 chart, the career may in fact prosper. In the above example, the Sun dasa goes well for career. Note: in the birth chart, the Sun is in its own sign and with dig bala and Moon is Full and has dig bala, and together they form a great Raja Yoga of the lord of the 9th house with the lord of the 10th house, and the Sun is in the 10th house and also a karaka of success in career.
4. The influence of a debilitated planet upon the dasa lord. If the dasa lord is in the same house or aspected by a planet in its sign of debilitation, then the themes of the D-chart during that dasa become disrupted, especially during the bhukti of the debilitated planet.
5. The influence of multiple malefics on the dasa lord.
If two or more strong malefics aspect the dasa lord, the themes of the D-chart become
more challenged. If the sole enemy also participates, even more difficulties occur.
Note: in the above example, Mars is retrograde and aspect Jupiter with its 8th aspect.
B. Less Common Exceptions:
1. Strong Malefics in Opposite Angles. If Saturn in Libra is opposite Mars in Aries, or if Saturn in Libra is opposite the Sun in Aries, or if Saturn in Aquarius is opposite the Sun in Leo, and the pair is occupying either the First and Seventh houses, or the Fourth and Tenth houses, the dasas of both planets go well for the themes of the D-chart.
2. The Sun and Moon. If the Sun occupies the companion house of the Moon and no other
planets are in either house, both dasas go well for the themes of the D-chart.
3. Strong Mars in the 6th house. If Mars is in its own sign or exalted and in the 6th house of a Dchart (and there are no planets in the 8th house), then the Mars dasa goes well (because Mars aspects the Ascendant from the 6th house).
4. Flanking by Malefics or Benefics. If the house occupied by the dasa lord is flanked on both sides only by malefics, the themes of the D-chart for that dasa are detrimented. On the other hand, if the house occupied by the dasa lord is flanked on both sides only by benefics, the themes of the D-chart for that dasa are enhanced.
5. Karakas in Bhavas. If the significator of a person is in a bad house in a relevant D-chart, this detriments the themes for that person during the planet's dasa. E.g. in the D9 when running the Venus dasa, if Venus is in the 3rd or 8th house (the two houses of endings) and there is no planet in the companion house, the end of a relationship is more likely because Venus is the significator
(karaka) of relationship. If Jupiter is in a bad house (3, 6, 8, or 12) in the D3 chart and there is no planet in the companion house, then there will be serious problems in the lives of one or more older siblings, especially during the Jupiter dasa.
If the Moon is in the 3rd or 8th house in the D8, one's mother or a significant female might die, and similarly with the Sun for the father or important men, in either of these houses in the D8.
6. Hijacking. In general, the dasa lord's placement counts for much more than the bhukti lord's placement. However, if the dasa lord occupies the sign or nakshatra ruled by the bhukti lord or is unilaterally aspected by the bhukti lord, then the bhukti lord's placement can take precedence over the dasa lords placement. This is especially true if the bhukti lord is stronger than the dasa lord.
7. Weaknesses and Strengths that Travel from Natal to D-Charts.
If: 1. The Moon is Dark (within 72 degrees of the Sun) or
2. If a true planet is the loser of a planetary war or
3. If a planet is combust (within 6 degrees of the Sun, but especially within 3 degrees of the Sun),
Then that planet's weakness affects its performance negatively in all D-charts.
If a planet is in the same sign (except its debilitation sign) in the birth chart and in the D-chart, it becomes very strong (vargottama).
If a planet is retrograde or the Moon is Bright (within one sign of opposite to the Sun in the natal chart), during its dasa, its strength carries though to all of the D-charts.
As mentioned earlier, a strong planet copes better and a weak planet copes worse.
Part Seven: Synthesizing birth chart and divisional charts placements
In general, for the themes specified by each D-chart, the D-chart placement takes precedence over the birth chart positions. E.g. if a dasa lord is nicely placed in the birth chart, but poorly placed in the D9, then relationship will be problematic during its dasa. See charts below.
Remember, if the dasa lord is strong in the natal chart and participates in yogas therein related to the theme of a D-chart, things will go well even if placed poorly in the D-chart.
If a dasa lord is well placed in both charts, themes go very well, and if poorly placed in both charts, themes go very poorly.
The Divisional Charts in Astrology assume great and larger importance for horoscope analysis according to Vedic system. The Divisional Chart is also called as Varga Chart. The credit for success of Vedic astrology over all other systems available in the present world goes in no small measures to the system of harmonic Vargas or divisional charts. Kalyan Verma (Saravali 3.12) opines that Vargas provide complete knowledge on the Bhavas, without which it is impossible to take even a step into the Divine Science of Astrology. The Vargas holds the key to predictions and delineating a horoscope for a comprehensive analysis. In a delicate event of making astrological predictions about natives of twin birth, whose birth chart and some times even Navamsa are identical, pose a great challenge to all the astrologers. To all such queries the Varga system is the answer. In the golden age of Vedic astrology, no prediction was given without consulting relevant Varga. The astrological predictions made in haste merely on the basis of Natal Chart (can be denoted as D-1 also) without consulting the relevant Vargas cannot be flawless. A number of astrologers following Vedic system of astrology do make their predictions only on the basis of Natal Chart (D-1) either out of their ignorance or limited knowledge or paucity of time as the case may be with them. Such predictions are always incomplete and at times misguiding, too.
I have come across several cases where a benefic planet is exalted in the Natal Chart (D-1) but debilitated in the respective Divisional Chart fails to give any benefic result in respect of the signification represented by the planet concerned. Take the cases of professional matter or marital affairs. The professional matter is normally seen from the 10th house of a Natal Chart (D-1). Suppose, the ruler of 10th house is exalted in a Natal Chart (D-1) and your astrologer without consulting the relevant Varga Chart has predicted that you have a great luck with regard to your profession, such prediction in all probability is likely to fail and misguiding for you if the same planet is debilitated in D-10 chart (Dasamasa chart). Now, take the example of marriage, which is another important area in the life of human beings. The marriage is normally seen from the 7th house of a horoscope. Suppose, the lord of the 7th house is exalted in your Natal Chart (D-1) and afflicted or debilitated or in evil houses in D-9, D-4 and D-30 charts, you would have delayed marriage and your married life would be a troublesome one for you. The analysis of Kundli made by the conventional astrologers is nothing but making predictions merely on the basis of Natal Chart (D-1) as can be seen in most of the cases. The skipping of divisional charts in horoscope analysis or without having thorough and adequate knowledge of divisional charts on the part of an astrologer may lead to wrong predictions. The astrological predictions given merely on the basis of only one chart viz. Natal chart cannot be considered to be complete and foolproof.
What is Vargas? The zodiac is consisting of 360 degrees or divided into 12 signs of approximately 30 degrees each. Each sign is further subdivided into number of generally equal divisions, wherein the position of each planet is mapped in each Amsa (Vargas/Divisions) accordingly. These are called Divisional Charts (D-Charts) or Vargas. Each Varga represents a specific aspect of a native’s life, like wealth, education, marriage, love affairs, children, profession, etc. Maharishi Parashar says that Lord Brahma has described 16 kinds of divisions (Vargas) for each sign. These are –
a) Rasi (D-1) – Each house is equivalent of a sign or 30 degrees;
b) Hora (D-2) – Half of a sign (15 degrees) is a Hora denoting wealth. What a great importance in one’s life?
c) Drekkana (D-3) – Each sign is divided into three equal parts of 10 degrees each signifying co-borns. An important chart by itself.
d) Chaturthamsha (D-4) – Each house is of one fourth of a sign or 7.30 minutes each signifying luck, childhood and property. Now try to understand the huge importance of this divisional chart in your life.
e) Panchamsha (D-5) – It is a meaningful divisional chart for bureaucrats and politicians as it denotes power and authority of a native.
f) Saptamsha (D-7) – Here each house is of one seventh of a sign each signifying progeny. Only a childless couple can understand the pain and agony of not having child of their own.
g) Ashtamsha (D-8) – Yet another important chart for those like research scholars, such people who are afraid of dismissal and demotion in their services/professions due to obvious reasons as may be known to them, wants to go to far off place in search of luck and for those who are desirous for inheritance. Problems arising in these areas can be addressed with the help of this divisional chart.
h) Navamsa (D-9) – Most popular divisional chart. It is one-ninth of a sign and signifies spouse, married life and general strength of planets. Think about the huge value of this chart in your life.
i) Dasamasa (D-10) – One of the most sought after chart in one’s life. It represents your profession, which is simply your life, and nothing can be more important than it.
j) Ekadasamsa (D-11) – This divisional chart is an extension of 11th house of Rasi Chart indicating all types of gains, success and progress. Some expert astrologers study the extent of success in speculation, which include stock markets, commodity markets and unearned money like through inheritance, lottery, gifts and prizes. A strong 11th house in comparison to 10th house is a blessing for person or a strong D-11 division in comparison to D-10 division is a blessing for a person to enjoy the unearned wealth. But it is not the subject matter of an ordinary astrologer but only a learned and expert astrologer can find meaning in it and help his client accordingly.
k) Dwadamasha (D-12) – Each division is of one twelfth of a sign signifying parents. This divisional chart is also studied to ascertain the wealth and longevity of your parents (your most beloved one) and overall most valuable inheritance from them. The Almighty God comes down to you through this chart in the shape of your parents and shower His unconditional Blessings on you as per your past Karma.
l) Shodasamsha (D-16) – Here each house of one sixteenth of a sign signifying vehicles, luxuries and happiness. Your vehicle would always meet with accident if your D-16 chart were not supportive to you. Before buying a car consult an expert astrologer having full and adequate knowledge of analysing your luck for conveyance. An expert astrologer in divisional chart is capable of suggesting you the lucky registration number for your car, its colour, etc. and so on.
m) Chaturvimsamsha (D-24) – Each division is of 1/24th of a sign signifying higher education, intellect and academic achievements. No body can ignore the importance of this divisional chart for proper grooming oneself educationally, which is literally a threshold in the professional arena. One can never be successful by wrong choice of the line for higher education. The importance of proper analysis of D-10 (professional matter) and D-24 (post higher secondary level education & training) assumed greater significance in this age of mounting unemployment amongst the educated youth.
n) Trimshamsha (D-30) – Here five planets enjoying rulership of two signs each controls five unequal parts of a sign. The luminaries and life givers Sun and Moon have been excluded from any rulership in this divisional chart for obvious astrological reasons. This Sub Division signifies misfortunes and sufferings in a native’s life including painful and incurable diseases and astrological remedies thereon. D-30 is the higher form of D-6 chart, which is analysed by an expert astrologer to mitigate the sufferings of illness, etc. from one’s life.
o) There are still many more divisional charts in Vedic Astrology like D-20, D-27, D-40, D-45, D-60, etc., which have their own importance at their own places and are used by an expert astrologer for reaching to a finest conclusion about the achievement of a person at higher planes. These divisional charts are not important at materialist parlance in the modern age context.
In the book “New Techniques of Prediction” by Shri Sheshadri Iyer he has proposed some fundamental rules for judging divisional charts. I have not used all these rules and not tested all of them. In fact, I am no expert in using Divisional Charts. I personally prefer mixing Krishnamurthy Paddhati with classical astrology for judgment. Nevertheless, I tried quite a few of them and found to be very useful in predictive astrology. Here are those rules -
1. The most important and necessary condition for a planet to give beneficial effect of the D chart is its relative good position from the lagna of that D-chart irrespective of other factors such as being in inimical or debilitated sign or aspect or conjunction with other planets. Thus under this theory primary factor is its position from D-lagna. If the planet be in places other than 3,6,8, and 12 (Dusthanas) it gives good results, its magnitude depending on other factors. But if they are in Dustnanas they always give bad results whatever their other results be.
But there are some exceptions to this:
a)Kuja even in 6th in all D charts does good for he aspects lagna from 6th.
b)Budha even in 8th in D-4 only gives good. Note the general theory of Budha being in 8 as being exceptionally lucky. It is only here and not in other D charts.
c)Shani though in 8 does not kill, is the general say. This holds good only in D-8 chart when Shani is in D-8 lagna and not elsewhere. Thus the above 3 exceptions have to be remembered.
2. Consider both the Rasi chart (D-1) and the divisional chart to weigh an effect. As stated above, position in D chart surpasses that in D-1 chart. Even though a planet is in bad bhava in D-1, he gives good effects of a D chart if he is there in good position from D lagna. Likewise however powerfully and favorably a planet is situated in D-1, if he is in Dustana in the D chart he gives bad effects of that D-chart.
3. Having concluded the good or bad effects as per Rules 1 and 2 above the magnitude of the effect has to be judged from both D-1 and D-charts as follows:
a.If the planet has any kind of Shadbalas [Temporal (Kalaja), Motional (chesta), exaltation (uccha), Directional (Digbala), Declinatory (Ayanabala), or positional (Sthanabala)] in D-chart and favourably situated from its Lagna it gives good effects of a higher magnitude, the more the quantum the more the simultaneous varied strengths. If in addition to this the planet is also powerfully situated in D-1 also excellent results of a superior degree happen.
b.Even a mere ordinary good position in D-chart coupled with strong position in D-1 (though in Dustana in D-1) gives effects of a higher order.
c.But, however strongly and favourably situated in D-1 if the planet be in Dustana in D-chart he does bad to that chart portfolio even if he is exalted or in his own house in that D-chart. All these establish the necessity of a planet being in good positions from the D-lagna to give the good results.
4. A combust or vanquished planet (in planetary fight) in D-1 is of no avail in D chart even if he is well placed and powerfully situated in D- Chart. He will give worst results to that D-effect if he is also badly placed in D-chart. It precisely amounts to dealing with a dead object.
5. If a planet situated favorably in D-chart is debilitated it gives good effect if it attains Neecha Bhanga.
6. Of all the powerful positions the most important are (a) Exaltation (b) Vargottama (c) Own house (d) Digbala. All these have to be applied to all the D-Charts. In this connection remember that a planet situated in the same sign both in D-1 and any other D-Chart must be construed as being in Vargottama with respect to that D chart and the effects of that D-chart read thereon. Unfortunately this aspect is being judged only by Navamsha position. (D-9) when you apply this theory you get convinced.
7. For reasons stated above exaltations in 3,6,8 or 12 in D-Chart are of no avail.
8. See if any of the general Yogas exist in the D-chart. If so gauge the magnitude by their strengths as stated above.
9. The effects of planets in the D chart get modified by conjunction or aspect of other planets in the D chart. Here only the natural benefics and natural malefics are to be taken and not the functional ones. Among benefics, Guru is the only planet to alleviate evil indicated by a planet in bad position in the D-chart. If that Guru is powerfully situated in that D chart his aspect is certainly of effect, but a debilitated Guru cannot be banked upon.
10. The birth Yogi and Avayogi have to be noted here. If the birth Yogi is in a good place in D-chart, he gives yoga to that effect but in a bad position he is lost. Similarly, birth Avayogi in a favorable position in D-chart will create hindrances, anxieties and trouble.
11. Lordship of Bhavas are to be considered only in D-1 and not in D-charts except lord of D-lagna.
12. A debilitated planet in D-Chart though in good position gives bad, if there be no Neecha Bhanga.
13. D-Lagna becoming Vargottama is itself an indication of the effect of that D-Chart going very high provided its lord is well placed there. If he is in Dusthana in such a D-chart, only dreamy effects are felt by the native. In addition to D-lagna being Vargottama, its lord be also likewise or otherwise powerfully and favourably situated in D-chart, he gives excellent results.
14. 3rd and 8th places are deathlike places. A planet in 8th or 3rd in D-chart causes death to that effect. In D-9 to wife, in D-10 to profession. Death may be construed as also severance. A planet in 3rd in D-10 causes retirement from service. Please note the exception of Shani in 1st house in D-8 and Budha in 8th in D-4.
15. 2nd house is said to be a neutral house. A planet in 2nd house in a D-chart also behaves likewise.
16. A planet in 6th house in D-chart in a powerful rasi gives good first and bad later on.
17. It is said in general astrology that the more the number of planets aspecting Lagna, the more powerful the native becomes. The same theory applies to D-chart also.
18. Benefics on either side of Lagna is said to confer Yoga. True even in the case of D-chart. But in such a situation if any malefic joins the benefic, the Yoga gets marred. Similarly, malefics on either side though spoils first, gets better if any benefics joins them. What is said of Lagna holds good with respect to the 7th house too. Here one thing has to be noted. In the case of malefics if they are Birth Yogi or in their own house in D-chart they give modified good effects.
19. Just as the 2nd and the 12th places from the lagna were dealt in point 18, if planets are placed equidistantly from lagna such as 2-12, 3-11, 4-10, 5-9, 6-8, 1-7 they cause effects as stated above depending on their natural benefic or malefic character. This is a special mention of Jaimini known as Sankhya Yoga.
19. In D-12 if moon is with Kethu invariably the native's mother becomes a widow.
20. Planets or bhavas hemmed in between malefics goes bad. Similarly a planet in a D-chart or a D-chart lagna hemmed in between malefics becomes bad.
21.Malefics in 12th, 1st and 2nd houses in a D-chart is not good. Benefics in 12th, 1st and 2nd houses in a D-chart is good.
22. An incident such as marriage day, commencement of profession or fresh undertaking, birth of an issue, etc happening during the period of a planet situated badly in the respective D-chart may not end happily.
23. Accession, election and other positions of conferrable nature are to be read from D-11.
[D11 is Labhamsa (profit & loss) (2 degrees, 8 mins and 11 secs) He gave this quite a lot of importance. For even if one's status is not good a happily situated D11 chart will confer on the native financial felicity tending his balance sheet towards profit side even without the least exertion for the same due to his past good karma. D10 represents earned income, while D11 represents unearned income as patrimony, easy income, side income, lottery, gambling etc. The formation of this chart is peculiar. In all rashis start from Mesha only and go in reverse order. Thus you see that the sign Vrishabha goes without any Amsha as the last eleventh Amsha closes with Mithuna.]
24. Uccha with Neecha or one with his enemy – Not good.
25. Of the 2 planets on either side of lagna or equidistant from D-lagna if one is benefic and the other malefic, then bad results are felt only during the malefic period.
26. A planet, though in the 8th house in D-chart, does not harm if aspected by a powerful Guru.
27. Female horoscope is specially treated by classics confining at least to our Indian womanhood. As marriage and married life is held sacred in India D-9 is held very important for females. If this Navamsha chart is good, all the rest are good.
28. A karaka in bad position in D-8 kills the relative connoted by the karaka. Sun in 8th house in D-8 kills father, Moon - Mother, Shukra -Wife and so on.
29. Any yoga in a D-chart is no doubt operative through out life but is particularly felt during their periods.
30. Even a debilitated planet in good position in a D-chart does good if he is a Yoga Planet.
31. In D-11 the effect of the Bhava occupied by the planet counted from D-lagna happens, one in 7th house causes marriage, in 4th property etc.
32. Parivartana Yoga (mutual exchange of grahas) existing in D-chart has its due effect.
33. What are all said of the planets in D-charts will be felt during their periods.
34. If the lord of the D-lagna is Birth Yogi or Duplicate Yogi he gives Yoga effects even in ordinary position.
35. If the lord of the D-lagna is in Dusthana the result will be bad on or after its Dasha.
36. Karaka in Bhava is bad as per general astrology. How to apply it to D-charts? Karaka in the corresponding D-lagna is bad. Example: If Budha is in lagna in D-24 education gets spoiled. Shukra in D-9 lagna affects the wife. Sun and moon in D-12 lagna affects father and mother respectively. Kuja in D-3 lagna affects the younger co-born and so on.
COMPUTATION OF LUCKY GEMS
Prescription of Gemstone is one of the most important aspects of remedies in Jyotish Shastra. The use of Gemstone is also endorsed by shastras such as Garuda Purana which gives elaborate description of the nature of the gemstones and their use. Even though gemstone use is one of the most popular source of remedies for all ills of the material world, may it be health, wealth or fortune, it is fraught with many misconceptions and erroneous notions of their selection and prescription. This article envisages providing consistent principles which would help the Jyotishas and laymen to select the right gemstones.
GEMSTONES OF YOGAKARAKAS
Since the gemstones enhance the influence of the planet in the life of the person, the gemstones for the planets giving yogas should always be chosen. To know the yoga givers or the yoga-karakas in a horoscope, studying classics such as Brhat Parashara Hora shastra should be studied. However, I shall provide here some guidelines which can help in choosing the gemstones.
LAGNA LORD IS THE FIRST AND FOREMOST YOGA KARAK IN A HOROSCOPE, since is the owner of both Kendra (Quadrant) and Kona (Trine). He is protector of the Lagna, which represent health, vitality and the controller of the whole horoscope. The placement of the Lagna lord is extremely important for the overall strength of the horoscope and its gemstone can help a person overcoming all difficulties in life.
THE LORDS OF THE TWO TRINE FIFTH AND 9TH HOUSE ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT.THEY ARE THE RWO IMPORTANT HOUSES WHICH CONTROL THE FINANCIAL WELLBEING OF THE PERSON. If they are badly placed in the horoscope, then the person might suffer financially in life. Thus their strength is extremely important in addition to the lords of second and eleventh, who signify Wealth and Income.
Each planet can give results on the following basis.
1. Lordship
2. Placement
3. Natural Karakatva (Significations)
4. Yoga (Exchange, Conjunction, Aspects)
Hence it must be remembered that a good planet (lords of Lagna, 5th and 9th) / Yoga- karaka if placed in a dusthana (6th / 8th/ 12th), they can also give malefic results in addition to their inherent benefic nature to do good. Similarly if the yogakarakas are involved in other bad yogas, they can give bad results, while their gemstones are worn. Whenever there is a conjunction or exchange of two planets, their inherent and functional nature is greatly modified. When a benefic planet comes into association with a malefic planet, then the benefic nature of the planet is corrupted and it starts giving malefic results, however the malefic planet gains out of the company and gives good results. Such subtle effects should always be kept into consideration, while suggesting a gemstone for Jyotish remedial purposes.
Exception to this is that, if Saturn becomes the Yoga-karaka and is placed in a dusthana, then its ability to do good increases. It is advisable to wear Neelam, Saturn’s stone for such cases.
GEMSTONE OF WEAK PLANET
If a yoga-karaka (or any good planet in the horoscope, lords of any houses other than 6th/ 8th or 12th) is debilitated, they must be strengthened. One of the ways is to wear the stone of the debilitated planet. However, the more effective way is to find the planet who is causing neecha-bhanga to the debilitated planet. If the neecha-bhanga is happening with respect to the Moon, then Mantra would be a good remedy, however, if it happens with respect to the Lagna, then wearing the gemstone of the planet causing the neecha-bhanga would make the debilitated planet come out of the state of debilitation.
When there is no cancellation of debility of other weaknesses then the gemstones for the supporters of the debilitated planet can be prescribed for causing cancellation of debility or for enhancing the life-forces that are being destroyed due to the debility. For example, the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio (8th house of natural zodiac) and is said to be MARANA KARAKA if placed in the 8th house from Lagna. Weakness of such Moon, in any chart is not good for longevity. Hence a blue sapphire is used for enhancing the life-force. The information regarding this is given at the detail section for each planet and their gemstones
It must be noted that debilitation of some planets are desirable in a horoscope. They are the lords of the Dusthanas (6th/ 8th/ 12th). If the lords of the Dusthanas are placed in other Dusthanas in debilitation, then it confers Vipareeta raja yoga, whereby the native gains due to the loss of natural and functional significations of the planet causing the yoga. For example, if 8th lord Moon is involved in Vipareeta Raja yoga, by its debilitation in the 12th house, the native might enjoy rise in life, but the Mother (natural signification of Moon) and the marriage (8th house is the longevity of marriage) might suffer simultaneously. To enjoy the fruits of Vipareeta Raja yoga, the native must not strengthen such debilitated planets that confer the yoga.
VIPAREETA RATNA (OPPOSITE GEMSTONE)
Vipareeta means opposite or gemstones used for weakening the effects of some planets in certain houses. If any house is occupied by an enemy of its Karaka, then the significations of the house suffer. Keeping this principle in view, the first house to be checked in any chart is the ninth house of fortune and Dharma with Jupiter & Sun as the significator. Rahu and Saturn are the enemies of these significator and if they are placed in the ninth house, they shall damage fortune and Dharma. The remedy is to strengthen the concerned Karaka by wearing its gemstone in the ring finger. Suka Nadi states that if Rahu is in the ninth house, then the native has good fortune after wearing a Topaz. The same principle of Vipareeta Ratna (Opposite Gemstone) has been used here. Rahu is the enemy of Jupiter and since it is placed in the ninth house, the use of a Topaz (gemstone of Jupiter) removes the misfortune caused by Rahu. Similarly, if Saturn is in the ninth house, then the person may suffer from poverty/ failure in the homeland after 36 years. To remove this evil, a ruby, the gemstone of the Sun (Saturn’s enemy) is worn
in the D1 chart of akhileshwar the sat is in 9th house, so wearing of ruby can remove the evils of sat in 9th affecting fortune. and dharma. BUT SUN IS POSITIONED IN 6TH HOUSE -DUSTSTHSN, SO AVOID RUBY.
GEMSTONES VS. DASAS
Hands in which the gemstones are worn to be chosen on the basis of certain criteria. The right hand is ruled Jupiter and the left hand by Venus indicating increase (right hand) or decrease (lift hand) of life force.
Thus, if gemstones have to be prescribed to decrease the evil effects of a malefic planet, its gemstone should be used in the left hand. Such use should be temporary covering the dasa-bhukti of the planet.
When the planet is a malefic for the horoscope, the maleficence of the planet can be reduced by wearing a counter gemstone temporarily during the Dasa-bhukti of the planet. If instead a gem is to be worn for the main Dasa planet itself, then it should be worn in the left hand. For example, if Rahu is malefic then during its period a Yellow Sapphire/Topaz/Citrine can be worn in the right hand ring finger or Hessonite/Brown Tourmaline etc can be worn in the left hand middle finger.
FLAWED GEMSTONE
A genuine gemstone of good quality should never be used with an imperfect or flawed gem or with one that is astrologically incompatible with it. Suta Goswami (Garuda Purana) advises “not to wear a gem that is of inferior quality or incompatible even if it is set together with the divine Kausthuba Mani of Vishnu. Just as the best of saints lose their merits by bad company, similarly, an imperfect/inferior or incompatible gemstone can ruin the beneficence of other good gems.
GEMSTONES AND LAGNA LORD
For determining compatibility of gemstones most astrologers go by the Naisargika Sambandha (natural relationship) of other planets with the stone of the principal/ruling planet. The Ruling Planet is the strongest one in trines to the Lagna or in the seventh house (1,5,7 & 9 houses), and if none are there, then the Lagna lord is chosen. Thus if the ruling planet is the Moon, then all planets are compatible with it, but if it is the Sun, then only Jupiter, Mars & Moon are compatible and their stones can be chosen.
Since the Lagna is the controller of the Horoscope, the impact of the Gemstone ultimately falls on the Lagna (more so, since Lagna is the controller of the physical body, where the gemstone is worn). The planets, whose gemstone is worn, should be a friend to the Lagna lord as per the naisargika sambandha. If any planet is inimical to the lord of Lagna, the use of its gemstone can damage / endanger the concerned people related to the house owned by the planet. For example if the lord of the fifth house is inimical to the Lagna lord, then the use of a gemstone of the fifth lord can endanger the life children. Hence utmost caution should be used in prescribing gemstones.
Naisargika Sambandha of Planets
Some astrologers also use Tatkalika Sambandha (Current relationship) between planets in a chart as this also takes the individual horoscope into focus. Here, the planets that are Param Mitra, Mitra or Sama to the ruling planet are chosen for supportive gemstones.
Among all the methods of judging the suitability of a Gemstone namely, the naisargika sambandha, tatkalika sambandha and other sambandha, the best and most beneficial gemstones are those of the planets involved in a beneficial Yoga. If the tenth and ninth lord are involved in a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga, then their stones should be used together to augment the effects of the Yoga. Gemstones of planets involved in Duryoga and other malefic combinations or where benefits accrue if the planets are weak and afflicted like the Vipareeta Rajyoga, should never be used.
GEMSTONES OF MUTUALLY INIMICAL PLANETS
Gemstones of mutually inimical planets should never be used simultaneously as they shall prove to be very adverse. Many astrologers give gemstones of mutually inimical planets such as Hessonite (Rahu) with Ruby (Sun) or Yellow Sapphire (Jupiter) or Red Coral (Mars). Such combinations can be extremely dangerous for the native. The natural fight between the owners of the gemstones can be visible in the life of native, where we can witness; the native is caught between many undesirable circumstances without his fault. The table shown below shows the natural relationships between the planets.
FINGERS AND GEMSTONES
The index finger is called Tarjani and is considered very inauspicious. In mantra recitation the beads should never touch this finger, even while turning the rosary (when we finish one circle of 108 beads). It rules the “Ahamkara” and is the finger of “fall” or expression of anger. The Gyana Mudra has all fingers except this index finger stretched out with the index finger (of anger) being in touch with and controlled by the Akasha Tattva of the Thumb. Normally for people who are spiritual / worship their Guru, gemstones should not be used in this finger. Some astrologers prescribe Ruby / Yellow Sapphire for Power / Wealth respectively, for use in the index finger. However these gemstones have been found to give better results of stable power and gradual stable growth in finance in the ring finger.
Tatwa in Palmistry
The gemstone of a planet placed in a house should be worn according to the quadrant (Kendra house) is whose trines it is placed. Thus a planet in the ninth house influences the Dharma Trikona and its gemstone should be worn in the ring finger. Gemstones of planets in Moksha Trikona (4, 8, 12) should not be prescribed as then they would be worn in the Tarjani (Index finger). Instead mantra of these planets should be advised.
Further gemstone cannot be worn in the finger of inimical elements. For example, if a Red Coral is to be worn for Mars placed in the seventh house, this cannot be prescribed for the little finger due to Mars ruling Agni Tattva (fire element), which is opposed to the Vayu Tattva (Air element). Thus a Coral can only be worn in the ring finger (Agni Tattva / Fire) or middle finger (Prithvi Tattva / Earth). Just as the thumb is different from the other four fingers and in conjunction with them does all work, the Akasha Tattva (Ether element–symbolized by the Thumb) permeates all signs of the other elements and is the driving force / Dhi Shakti.
GEMSTONES AND ARUDHA LAGNA
ARUDHA LAGNA IS THE SIGN ARRIVED AT BY COUNTING AS MANY AS SIGN FROM LORD OF LAGNA AS LORD OF LAGNA IS REMOVED FROM LAGNA. THUS IN CASE OF AKHILESHWAR SCORPIO IS LAGNA AND ITS LORD MARS IS POSITIONED IN MEEN IN 5TH HOUSE SO CANCER WILL BE THE ARUDHA LAGNA OF AKHILESHWAR
Since the gemstones are taken for fulfilling the material pursuits in the life than anything else, the arudha lagna plays a very vital role in selection of the gemstones. Arudha Lagna shows the image in this world or in other words, the perception of the world related to the native. This is the material manifestation of the existantial reality of a person. Maharishi parashara says that planets in the twelfth of Arudha Lagna (AL) can show the sources of expenditure, while that in the 11th from the AL show the sources of Income. Even though the promise of the wealth can be seen from different dhana yogas in the horoscope and the strength of the 2nd, 11th and the trines, the sources and the quantum of the gains or losses can be seen from the Arudha.
Thus, it is very important to consider the placement of Planets with respect to the Arudha Lagna for final selection of an Gemstone. The following guidelines can help in such judgement:
1. If a planet is placed in or aspecting the 12th from the Arudha Lagna, the gemstone for such planet can increase the expenditure of the native. Malefics are well placed here as it confer rajayoga while placed here in addition to the expenses shown. However one must remember that planets placed here shows the persons who would secretly oppose the native in various activities. So the gemstones of such planets to be chosen after careful consideration of all factors involved.
2. The gemstone of a planet placed in or aspecting the 11th from Arudha Lagna shall give income from the sources indicated by the planet. The sources can be known by judging both the functional as well as natural significations of the concerned planet.
3. The 2nd and 7th house from the Arudha Lagna are the houses of sustainance of the Image. They should be occupied by benefics or exalted planets. If they are occupied by malefics, the gemstones of such planets can cause fall of image and troubles in career and various other troubles. In addition the planets in the 7th from Arudha lagna shows the persons who would openly oppose the person in various activities, and this is more true with respect to the Malefics. Thus if benefics are placed in the 7th from the Arudha Lagna, their gemstones can be given, provided the native can withstand the opposition shown by the concerned planet.
4. The planets in the Arudha Lagna shows how the world perceives the native. The presence of Moon or Jupiter in the Arudha Lagna gives long lasting fame. They should otherwise be placed with benefics or exalted planets and gemstones of such Moon, Jupiter, benefics or exalted planets can be beneficial to the native, otherwise it can be harmful.
Similarly the lord of the Arudha Lagna should ideally be well placed in either exaltation, mulatrikona, own house or friends house. If gemstone of such planets is worn, it would benefit the native by uplifting his image. If such planet is in fall or unfavourably placed, then the gemstone of the planet, countering the evil has to be worn (please refer to relevant section for more information on this)
5. Malefics in the 3rd or 6th gives material success whereas benefics in these places makes the person spiritual, unless they are debilitated. Thus wearing the gemstones of the malefics placed in 3rd or 6th can help in fulfilment of objectives and gaining over all odds. However, malefics in the 3rd from AL can be detrimental to the health and longevity, thus while prescribing the gemstones, one need to consider this factor as well.
6. The eighth house is also very crucial in a way that it controls the longevity of the person. Malefics placed over there can harm the health of the person and also the image. Stones of such malefics placed there should never be worn.
7. All planets either be benefics or malefics give good results and financial gains while placed in the 9th house from the arudha Lagna. Unless any other adverse yogas exist, gemstone of such planet would be beneficial to the native.
IN CASE OF AKHILESHWAR MARS IS PLACED IN MEEN WHICH IS 9TH FROM THE ARUDHA LAGNA CANCER, SO THE GEMSTONE OF MARS WILL GIVE GOOD RESULTS AND FINANCIAL GAINS.
8. 10th house shows the impact of a planet in the native's career. Benefics are best suited here and malefics are prohibited. For example, if Saturn is placed in such 10th, then the career becomes a bed of thorne for the native.
DETAILS OF GEMSTONES
RUBY is the precious stone that occurs as a red, transparent variety of the mineral corundum. It is symbolic of excellent health, vigor, love and passion, an aid to firm friendship, and believed to ensure beauty. It strengthens the heart and blood circulation, makes one bold and courageous and eliminates depression, sadness or sensuality. Increase name and fame. Its color ranges from purplish red (called Pigeon Blood) or bluish red to a yellowish red. When cut into a cabochon (a non-convex) form, some specimens of ruby exhibit asterism i.e. a six-rayed star can be seen in the interior of the stone. These are called star rubies and are very highly prized. Burmese rubies are considered the finest. The ruby is a very brilliant, hard, durable, and wearable stone.
PEARL is a lustrous concretion consisting mainly of Nacre (Popularly called mother-of pearl), which is the substance forming the inner layers of the mollusc shells. The pearl is an abnormal growth due to a minute foreign particle invading the body of the mollusc. The particle irritates the mollusc and becomes coated with layers of Nacre. Both marine and freshwater molluscs produce pearls. Spherical pearls are the best. A Bouton pearl is hemispherical. If a solid pearl has an irregular shape, it is known as a Baroque pearl. Pearls are commonly known as pear, bell, or drop, according to the shape. Pearl coloration varies as white, black, rose, and cream.
Natural, spherical pearls have been cultured successfully since 1920. This is controlled, but natural and these pearls can also be used as astrological gems. Artificial pearls, in contrast to cultured pearls, are entirely artificial, made largely of glass and should be rejected. A good pearl strengthens mental faculties, calms emotions and increases peace of mind. This is an excellent gem for meditation.
RED CORAL is a large class of marine invertebrates characterized by a protective calcium carbonate or horny skeleton (also called coral). Corals are divided into two subclasses, based on differences in their radial symmetry (symmetry around a central axis) of eight-tentacle animals, each with an internal skeleton or six-tentacle (or multiples of six). The Red coral belongs to the eight-tentacle sub-class. It removes obstacles and averts accidents, discord and warfare. It is an asset in money matters and makes a person debt free. By purifying the blood it helps in pregnancy & childbirth besides curing boils.
EMERALD is the green variety of the mineral beryl making its wearer faithful & of fixed commitments. It helps in planning & forecasting by enhancing intuition & psychic powers. It sharpens the intellect and gives a photogenic memory thereby improving learning ability, communication and clairvoyance. Good for general health, particularly the nervous system, it also has the power of healing diseases of the eye. It has the colour of fresh young green grass as in the world's finest "drop of oil" emerald from Colombia.
Although a hard stone, emeralds chip easily since it somewhat brittle. Hence, special care should be given in wearing and handling. A common flaw reduction technique is to boil the emerald in oil (sometimes tinted green) and is actually good for the stone in light of its fragile nature. Oiling hides some of the whitish flaws (cracks) by filling the cracks and becomes an integral part of the emerald unless it is subjected to some type of degreasing procedure.
YELLOW SAPPHIRE the symbol of universal love and brotherhood, promotes general well being and spiritual knowledge. It is very helpful for pregnancy & childbirth. It nullifies Kuja Dosha and promotes marriage and controls a malefic Mars in preventing jaundice and liver diseases. Excellent for business stability and financial matters, it is one of nature's most wonderful gifts.
Topaz occurs not only in the transparent yellow, yellow brown, orange-brown, and pink-brown colours. It is a hard, brilliant stone but it is much rarer and much more expensive than the Citrine (Quartz) stones commonly sold as "Rio topaz," "Madeira topaz," "Spanish topaz," and "Palmeira topaz."
DIAMOND Induces purity and fearlessness. Gives artistic abilities and worldly happiness. Strengthens bones and is useful for combating diseases of the sex organs. Makes one more attractive.
BLUE SAPPHIRE The finest blue sapphires are from Burma and Kashmir. It counteracts enviousness from others and removes the evil eye thereby protecting from travel dangers and mental unrest and various forms of madness. It alleviates long-term misfortunes by causing a change of place/residence. Fine, brilliant, deep blue Burmese sapphires will surely dazzle the eye.
HESSONITE has smoky-red lustre. The other varieties are of honey colour.
CAT’S EYE is gem-quality chrysoberyl. With cabochon cut (oval, rounded form), a light-coloured line appears that moves as the gem is turned, giving the stone a resemblance to the eye of a cat. This phenomena called chatoyance (asterism) is caused by a parallel arrangement of fine fibres of either foreign substance or minute hollow tubules.
TEN PRIMARY GEM CHOOSING METHODS
compiled by Richard S. Brown
PLANET ——GEMSTONE——-GOD/GODDESS
Sun ———–Ruby————— Lord Shiva
Moon———- Pearl ————– Lord Shiva/Parvathi/DurgaMa
Mars———- Coral————— Hanuman/ Kartikeya/Subramanya/Narasimha swamy
Mercury——- Emerald———– Vishnu/Parvathi
Jupiter——– Yellow-Sapphire —–Lord Shiva/Lord Brahma
Venus ——–Diamond ————- Lord Lakshmi/ DurgaMa
Saturn——- Blue-Sapphire ——– Lord Shani /Hanuman/Shiva
Rahu——- Gomed —————- Lord Hanuman/Lord shiva/ Subramanya
Ketu——— Cat’s eye ————-Ganesha/Bhairav
After a lot of interaction with different members of the PGA we have identified TEN PRIMARY GEM CHOOSING METHODS:
1) Lagna Lord's gem method for improving health (Example: If Lagna is Leo, a sign ruled by Sun, the gem would be ruby or other Sun gems like red spinel or red garnet),
---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' (strong) position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' (weak) position.
2) Moon Rasi Lord's gem method (Example: If Moon is in Virgo, a sign ruled by Mercury, then the gem would be emerald or another Mercury gem like tsavorite or green tourmaline);
---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' position.
3) Maha-dasha Lord's gem method for ...
a. Overcoming bad Dasha periods, or
b. Boosting good Dasha periods
(Example: If one is in a Mars Mahadasha or Bhukti then red coral or another Mars gem like red carnelian should be worn),
---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' position.
4) Weak Planet's gem method for overcoming a weak planet based on the concept that a 'weak' (inauspicious) planet is strengthened by wearing it's gem and there by it changes from being inauspicious (weak) to become auspicious (strong). Example: A person has Jupiter debilitated (0% power) which is inauspicious, but by wearing yellow sapphire or another yellow Jupiter jewel, it is believed that the 'weak' (troublesome) Jupiter gets strengthened and becomes auspicious.
5) Strong Planet's gem method for resorting to one's strong auspicious planet(s) (exalted, mulatrikona, own sign, great friend, etc.) based on the concept that lucky planet = luck gem! One should avoid their 'weakness and cultivate their strength. Most auspicious gem of strongest most desirable planet. Example: One has Leo Lagna and their lagna-lord is Sun, who is exalted (100% strength) and posited in the 9th house which is all very auspicious. That person would be advised to use a fine ruby, the Sun’s gem, to attract or harness his auspicious influence. On the other hand if the same person had Saturn debilitated (0% strength) and in the 8th house they would be advised to avoid Saturn’s gem blue sapphire and all other Saturnine things or activities. And better still they could donate a blue sapphire to pacify Shanideva.
6) Fadic number method - Use Fadic number planet's gem for general luck. (Example: If birth date is 1+13+1966 (1+1+3+1+9+6+6) equals T: 36 = T: 9 = cosmic number for Mars (red coral).
17+4+1947=1+7+4+1+9+4+7=33=6 venus diamond
11th lord=meR placed in 5th house. and under aspect of jupiter, so the native cane use panna/emerald for gains.
7) Gem of 11th lord method - Eleventh lord's gem is to be worn for gains:
---Yes if the 11th Lord (planet) is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the 11th Lord (planet) is located in a 'bad' position.
8) Gem of 10th lord method for strengthening one's profession:
---Yes if the 10th Lord (planet) is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the 10th Lord (planet) is located in a 'bad' position.
9) Gem of 9th lord method for improving fortune, happiness
---Yes if the 9th Lord (planet) is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the 9th Lord (planet) is located in a 'bad' position.
10) Gem donation method. It is taught that if a person has a very weak and inauspicious planet causing them harm, this harmful influence can be mitigated by pacifying the harmful planet (Graha-deva) through a sacrifice by donating a gem for the harmful planet to a specified recipient. Example: A person who has Rahu posited in a harmful (weak) position and is in a troublesome Rahu Maha-Dasha would be advised to donate a hessonite or another Rahu gem to a leper on Saturday evening during the waxing Moon.
First an explanation of
Anukul / Pratikul
The Planetary Gemology World is divided into two (2) opposing philosophies, viz., Anukul-vad v/s Pratikul-vad:
ANUKULA-VAD: A Jyotish Gem will act "SAME" as it's planet - So gems should be chosen for Anukul (favorable) grahas
PRATIKUL-VAD: A Jyotish Gem will act "OPPOSITE" of it's planet - So gems should be chosen for Pratikul (unfavorable) grahas
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anukul Planet's gem choosing method for resorting to or harnessing one's auspicious (Anukul) planet(s) (exalted, mulatrikona, own sign, benefic, great friend, good house, owner of good house, etc.) based on the concept that lucky planet = lucky gem! In Jyotish there are basically two broad categories of planetary position, viz., favorable (to the chart) (Anukul) OR unfavorable (to the chart). One should avoid their weakness and cultivate their strengths. "Ratna-anukul" means the auspicious gem of strongest most desirable planet. Example: One has Leo Lagna - their lagna lord is Sun, who is exalted (100% strength) and posited in the 9th house which is all very auspicious. That person would be advised to use a fine ruby, the Sun’s gem, to attract or harness his auspicious influence. On the other hand if a person had Saturn debilitated (0% strength) and in the 8th house they would be advised to avoid Saturn’s gem blue sapphire and all other Saturnine things or activities. And better still they could donate a blue sapphire to pacify Shanideva. The followers of Anukul-vad believe that the pratikul-graha color is the unlucky color, and to magnify that bad color will simply increase the problems caused by that unlucky Planet. Both methods believe that gems increase cosmic colors of their planets, thus for an Anukuli it is considered to be suicide to increase a pratikul-graha's color. In Anukul there is never a case where a Pratikul (harmful to the chart/native) planet's gem should be worn as it will surely increase the ill fortune; but such gems for a Pratikul planet can be used by DONATING them - giving them AWAY - according to Shastric directions. A pure anukuli believes that a pratikul-gem is NEVER good to use; it is increasing the cosmic poison, and ill fortune (a person's bad cosmic vibes) should NEVER be increased. Anukul means a planet that is beneficially disposed either by being strong in own sign, good house, ruler of houses which will bring positive results, or otherwise not ill disposed nor inclined to produce evil influence. A planet which is good for the chart either naturally or by house ruler ship yet somewhat weakened by placement may be strengthened through the gem, or a planet which already is strong and giving benefic influence may be further strengthened for gains in particular areas of life by wearing the gem.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pratikul Planet's gem choosing method for overcoming a weak or evil planet, based on the misconception that a 'pratikul' (inauspicious) planet is strengthened by wearing it's gem and there by it changes from being inauspicious (pratikul) to become auspicious (anukul). ILLOGIC: By providing the gem for a malefic planet, benefic results will follow. Example: A person has Jupiter debilitated and a malefic which is inauspicious or pratikul, but by wearing Jupiter's gem, yellow sapphire or another yellow Jupiter jewel, it is believed that the 'weak' (troublesome) Jupiter gets strengthened and REVERSES to become auspicious. Some persons opine that a harmful planet means that the planet's "cosmic color" is weak. The gems for the planets are concentrated essential cosmic color rays; so by wearing the gem for the weak, Pratikul (harmful) color that weak color is strengthened, and when the weak color is stronger then the harmful influence will be REVERSED, removed or mitigated. Pratikul means a planet that causes evil influence or suffering to the native as seen through the horoscope. This may be a debilitated planet who is in a dusthana and enemy of the lord of the lagna, or otherwise disposed that the influence simply causes suffering.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before describing the most popular methods, let me first say that choosing gems which are favorable (Anukul for the native's chart) as well as clean (amala) and auspicious, these two are a MUST in planetary gemology. Of the 6 PGA CODES the prohibition against astrological use of synthetics is the least of all PG evils as synthetics have no harmful effect because they have NO effect whatsoever. The most important considerations are Anukul-graha gem choosing and flawless gems - 100% loupe clean down to 80% loupe clean is an acceptable range in our experience. Always exercise CAUTION with any gem that has clarity below 80% loupe clean. Very flawed gems are dead due to serious life-ending defects, and according to Shastra, "If anyone wears a gem with many flaws (even) out of ignorance, then grief, anxiety, sickness, death, loss of wealth and other evils torment them."--- Sri Garuda Purana:1.70.19
When choosing gems we must add up the pluses in a chart. For example, one chart has a planet exalted in a good house but a functional malefic and lord of two bad houses, so on the surface we have two pluses and three minuses or "+ + - - -" , i.e., a good sign placement, a good house placement, but it is unfavorable by nature for the native, and is lord of two bad houses. Another chart might have a debilitated planet that is a functional benefic and in a good house, and lord of two good houses, so that means a "- + + + +" In the first example we could rule the planet as borderline unfavorable (pratikul); but the 2nd case has the planet mostly favorable (anukul) - So a weak, beneficial planet can be made stronger. A strong anukul planet can also be made even stronger to attain certain goals, like making an exalted Sun even stronger because the native desires fame or increase in stature (provided the native HAS the karma to achieve that, because we cannot do BETTER than our karma).
Taking this further one could see planetary periods in motion, movements of Saturn, Yogini-dashas, as well as aspects, navamsa positions, etc. to first of all conclude if the planet in question is FAVORABLE - OR - UNFAVORABLE for the chart, all things considered. It doesn't matter if a planet is strong or weak, it only matters that the planet is judged as favorable (anukul-graha) or unfavorable (pratikul-graha). An anukul-graha can always be strengthened, but a pratikul-graha should never be strengthened
RATNA-ARPANA: Gems for Pratikul-grahas may be DONATED or GIVEN AWAY in a form of Vedic charity to achieve Graha-shanti is another subject known as, "Ratna-arpana." Using gem donations is he ONLY time an UNFAVORABLE planetary gem should be used by the native - by giving it AWAY. The native should be informed what planets are most FAVORABLE for them and then the native may choose from among their Anukul-graha-ratnas or favorable planetary gems.
Adding the plus and minus points to determine which planets are most favorable to the native enables us to proceed further.
1. First look to the lagna or rising sign and then check the lord of the rising sign to see if it is in an auspicious condition in the rasi and navamsa charts. If this is the case then we wholeheartedly prescribe the gemstone ruled by the lagna's lord. Example: If one has Leo rising we look to the position of the Sun (Lord of Leo) in the chart. If the Sun is posited in an auspicious sign, e.g., sign of exaltation, own sign, trine, or at least a friendly sign, it will act in a beneficial way. If any of these are the case then we may recommended ruby or another "Sun jewel" as one's first gem choice. NOTE: If the birth time is unknown or unsure then skip this method...
A list of the primary rising sign gems is given as follows:
RISING SIGN (Lagna) RULING PLANET GEMSTONE
Aries Mars Red Coral
Taurus Venus Diamond
Gemini Mercury Emerald
Cancer Moon Pearl
Leo Sun Ruby
Virgo Mercury Emerald
Libra Venus Diamond
Scorpio Mars Coral
Sagittarius Jupiter Yellow Sapphire
Capricorn Saturn Blue Sapphire
Aquarius Saturn Blue Sapphire
Pisces Jupiter Yellow Sapphire
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. We next check the position of the planet ruling one's mahadasha or major planetary period. If this planet is well-placed in both the rasi as well as the navamsa charts then we prescribe that planet's gemstone(s) for use during the duration of the mahadasha period. Example: If one is in or entering a Jupiter mahadasha and if Jupiter is posited in an auspicious sign and/or house position, then we recommend yellow sapphire or another natural yellow gemstone. At the time of ones birth a certain planetary period will be in motion. If a person is born in the middle of their Venus major period then they still have 10 more years of major Venus influence before they change into their Sun period at the age of 10 years. Each major planetary period follows a certain order and is of a fixed period of time - this information is given as follows:
SUN PERIOD: 6 years
MOON PERIOD: 10 years
MARS PERIOD: 7 years
RAHU PERIOD: 18 years
JUPITER PERIOD: 16 years
SATURN PERIOD: 19 years
MERCURY PERIOD: 17 years
KETU PERIOD: 7 years
VENUS PERIOD: 20 years
Depending on the period in operation when one is born, the soul will pick up the periods and pass through them in succession in the order given above.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Also look to one's birth sign or Moon rasi , i.e., the sign in which the Moon is posited at the time of one's birth. In sidereal astrology the Moon's sign position is considered very important. Example: If one's Moon sign is Leo, a sign ruled by the Sun, then look to the sign and house position of the Sun in the horoscope. If the Sun is located in an auspicious position in their chart (unless otherwise afflicted) then one can recommend a ruby or other red Sun jewel as one's "birth stone."
Here is the list of primary Vedic "birthstones"
BIRTHSTONE RULING PLANET MOON SIGN
Ruby Sun Leo
Pearl Moon Cancer
Coral Mars Aries/Scorpio
Emerald Mercury Gemini/Virgo
Yellow Sapphire Jupiter Sagittarius/Pisces
Diamond Venus Taurus/Libra
Blue Sapphire Saturn Capricorn/Aquarius
Hessonite Rahu N/A
Cat's eye Ketu N/A
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Then check the janma-naksatra or the constellation in which the Moon is posited at birth. Each of these 27 birth stars is ruled by one of the nine planets recognized in sidereal astrology. Example: If one's birth constellation is "punarvasu" (the 7th constellation), which is ruled by Jupiter, then look to the position of Jupiter in the horoscope. If Jupiter is located in an auspicious sign and/or house position in the rasi chart (unless otherwise afflicted) then recommend yellow sapphire or another yellow "Jupiter" jewel.
Following is a list of the 27 constellations, their ruling planet and corresponding primary gemstone: BIRTH STAR RULED BY GEM
1. ASWINI Ketu (Moon's South Node) Cats Eye
2. BHARANI Venus (Shukra) Diamond
3. KRTTIKA Sun (Surya) Ruby
4. ROHINI Moon (Chandra) Pearl
5. MRIGASHIRA Mars (Mangal) Coral
6. ADRA Rahu (Moon's North Node) Hessonite
7. PUNARVASU Jupiter (Guru) Yellow Sapphire
8. PUSHYAM Saturn (Shani) Blue Sapphire
9. ASHLESHA Mercury (Budha) Emerald
10. MAGHA Ketu (Moon's South Node) Cat's Eye
11. POORVA-PHALGUNI Venus (Shukra) Diamond
12. UTTAR-PHALGUNI Sun (Surya) Ruby
13. HASTA Moon (Chandra) Pearl
14. CHITRA Mars (Mangal) Coral
15. SWATI Rahu (Moon's North Node) Hessonite
16. VISHAKA Jupiter (Guru) Yellow Sapphire
17. ANURADHA Saturn (Shani) Blue Sapphire
18. JYESTHA Mercury (Budha) Emerald
19. MULA Ketu (Moon's South Node) Cat's Eye
20. POORVASHADA Venus (Shukra) Diamond
21. UTTARSHADA Sun (Surya) Ruby
22. SRAVANA Moon (Chandra) Pearl
23. DHANISTHA Mars (Mangal) Coral
24. SATAVISHA Rahu (Moon's North Node) Hessonite
25. POORVABADRAPADA Jupiter (Guru) Yellow Sapphire
26. UTTARBHADRAPADA Saturn (Shani) Blue Sapphire
27. REVATHI Mercury (Budha) Emerald
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Next examine all the nine planets in the rasi chart to see if any are exalted. Planets which are in their sign of maximum strength (exaltation) give positive and beneficial results, and their gemstone(s) may be used with advantage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Another consideration is sign ownership . A planet which is located in it's own sign will give beneficial results, and that planet's gem can also be used to advantage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. A further consideration is any planet which is in it's sign of mulatrikona or trine. A Planet in mulatrikona gives beneficial results similar to an exalted planet, and their gem(s) may be used to advantage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. A planet which is located in a friendly sign can also give beneficial results, and it's gemstone may be used to advantage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. The final consideration is 'preference' based on the characteristic "planetary influence." Example: If a person wishes to use a Sun jewel like ruby or red spinel to increase their name and fame, then they can use that stone provided the person's Sun is not located in an unfriendly or inauspicious sign and/or house position in their sidereal horoscope.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPECIAL: Using Planetary Gems by DONATING them. It is our experience that fine, natural gemstones do indeed "strengthen" or magnify the influence of their associated planets. Therefore, lucky planets = lucky gems. If a person intends to wear their lucky gemstone then they should only use gems which are related to planets that are considered to be "lucky" or posited in an auspicious rasi (zodiac sign) and/or bhava (house) in their sidereal birth chart. Gemstones do not alter or change the angle, position or condition in which planets are placed in one's horoscope. Methods for propitiating or reducing the harmful effects of evil or malevolently placed planets in one's birth chart include the chanting of planetary mantras, prescribed sacrifices and charity. These may be performed along with the use of associated planetary gemstones to help "magnify" the prayer. A person who is unwilling to perform these meritorious acts should not use gems for unlucky planets.

It is very important to choose the key gemstone that would help an individual in all affairs. There are several methods by which gemstones are advised to individuals. Some are of the opinion that Gemstones be prescribed for planets having a malefic influence on the individual. Others say that Gemstones be prescribed for planets that are having a benefic influence on the individual. There are other methods too. Expereince shows it that Gemstones should be advised for planets that assume a key role in the chart and cast a benefic influence on the individual. This subject calls for lot of independent research. Here is a basic method that would be applicable in most of the cases:
1) Look at the ascendant Lord. This planet is the most important planet and generally controls everything in an individual’s life and most importantly health. If health is Gone then everything is Gone. The Ascendant Lord should be given the first priority in all cases.
2) Look at the key planets for the ascendant.,. For example for the Aries Ascendant Jupiter is a Key planet. If Jupiter is occupying Friendly signs, is in exaltation or is occupying the auspicious houses then Jupiter’s Gemstone i.e., the Yellow Sapphire be advised to the native.
3) Gemstones of the 6th,8th and 12th houses be avoided if they do not own a trine.
4) Gemstones for planets that are in debilitation should be avoided.
5) Examination should be made of the Major period. If the Lord of the Major period qualifies on the above four criteria then its gemstone be advised.
6) Combinations of Gemstones are allowed provided they are not enemies to each other. For example wearing a Ruby as well as a blue Sapphire is not advisable.
7)Lord of the ascendant ,fifth house and ninth house invariably are good for the native if placed well. Their gemstones should be considered
Look at the two charts below:
Case I
Chart I is of a male.
Let us look at the most beneficial planets for this individual. Venus is the Lord of the ascendant and also the lord of the Sixth House. Venus is placed in the 12th house a house considered good for Venus but in Aries Venus is placed in the Sign of Mars which is it’s enemy. Now check the Lord of the fifth House i.e., Mercury. Mercury in addition to being the Lord of the fifth house is also the Lord of 2nd house (Death Inflicting House). Mercury is placed in the 11th house in Pisces a sign of Jupiter. Mercury .Let us look at Saturn. Saturn is the Lord of the 9th house the house of fate and the Lord of 10th House the house of Profession. Saturn hence is the most powerful planet for the Taurus ascendant being the Lord of a trine and a quadrant. It is a Yoga karaka planet for this ascendant. Next look at the position of Saturn. Saturn is placed in the 4th house the house of Land, mother and worldly pleasures. Over here Saturn is placed in enemy’s sign .Leo is the sign of Sun and Sun is the enemy of Saturn. The major period of Saturn for this individual started two tears ago. He was advised wear a Blue Sapphire of 5 carats in the middle finger of the right hand in alloy. The gemstone suited him and he is living with peace and prosperity. He will prosper in Saturn’s Dasha.
Case II
Chart two is of a female native.
The ascendant lord is Mercury. Note that Mercury is also the Lord of the 10th house. Hence by the virtue of owning two Kendra’s he suffers from Kendradhipati Dosha hence is rendered weak and does not give the effects of the two houses in a complete manner. Still these are very important houses in the chart and Mercury will give its effect. Mercury is placed in the 2nd house in Libra which is the sign of its friend Venus. Here Mercury is creating the Lakshmi Yoga and is capable of creating affluence. Note the position of moon in Gemini in the 10th house. The lady’s moon sign is Gemini again a sign ruled by Mercury. Hence Mercury plays a very important role in the Lady’s life despite Venus classified as a Yoga karaka Planet for Virgo ascendant. This Lady is Passing through the major period of Saturn and the sub period of Mercury .Hence emerald is the key stone for the native and she should give precedence to emerald over any other planetary gemstone. Saturn is the Lord of the fifth house and also the sixth house. Sixth house is the house of diseases and enemies and is placed in 12 house again an inauspicious house. Though Saturn is causing the Vipareeta Raja Yoga it is not advisable to give strength to Saturn .Since the native is undergoing the major period of Saturn it is best to pacify it by chanting his mantra, donation to poor people etc.Note the ninth House. the Lord of the ninth house is Venus who is alo the Lord of the 2nd house. It is placed in the 2nd house in own sign .It has a good placement but Venus major period is far off. The Single key gemstone for this Lady would be emerald. Incidentally this Lady is a Finance Manager in a Leading Consultancy firm (A Area Ruled by Mercury)

Gem Choosing Basics.
1. First look to the lagna or rising sign and then check the lord of the rising sign to see if it is in an auspicious condition in the rasi chart.

2. PLANETARY PERIODS: Every person is born into a planetary period. The period will be good or bad depending on the period’s ruling planet. Like if one is in a Sun period, and Sun is GOOD in their chart, then that will be a good period characterized by the Sun (leadership, courage, etc.); but if the position of the Sun is harmful then it would be a bad period of life.
For GEMS we check the position of the planet ruling one's mahadasha or major planetary period. If this planet is well-placed in the rasi chart then we prescribe that planet's gemstone(s) for use during the duration of the mahadasha period. Example: If one is in or entering a Jupiter mahadasha and if Jupiter is posited in an auspicious sign and/or house position, then we recommend yellow sapphire or another natural yellow gemstone.
At the time of ones birth a certain planetary period will be in motion. If a person is born in the middle of a Venus major period then they still have 10 more years of major Venus influence before they change into their Sun period at the age of 10 years. 3. Next we look to one's birth sign or Moon rasi , i.e.,the sign in which the Moon is posited at the time of one's birth. In siderealastrology the Moon's sign position is considered very important. Example:If one's Moon sign is Leo, a sign ruled by the Sun, then we must look tothe sign and house position of the Sun in the horoscope. If the Sun islocated in an auspicious position in both the rasi chart and the navamsachart then we can recommend a ruby or other red Sun jewel as one's "birthstone."
The list of these Vedic "birthstones" IS SHown in POINT II AS STATED ABOVE
4. We then check the janma-naksatra or the constellationin which the Moon is posited at birth. Each of these 27 birth stars isruled by one of the nine planets recognized in sidereal astrology. Example:If one's birth constellation is "punarvasu" (the 7th constellation), whichis ruled by Jupiter, then we look to the position of Jupiter in the horoscope. If Jupiter is located in an auspicious sign and/or house position in boththe rasi chart and the navamsa chart, then we can recommend yellow sapphireor another yellow "Jupiter" jewel.

5. Next we examine all the nine planets in the rasi chartto see if any are exalted. Planets which are in their sign of maximum strength(exaltation) give positive and beneficial results, and their gemstone(s)may be used with advantage.
6. Another consideration is sign ownership . A planetwhich is located in it's own sign will give beneficial results, and that planet's gem can also be used to advantage.
7. A further consideration is any planet which is in it's own sign of mulatrikona or trine. A Planet in mulatrikona gives beneficial results similar to an exalted planet, and their gem(s) may be used to advantage.
8. A planet which is located in a friendly sign will also give beneficial results, and it's gemstone may be used to advantage.
9. Our final consideration is preference based on the characteristic "planetary influence." Example: If a person wishes to usea Sun jewel like ruby or red spinel to increase their name and fame, then we will recommend that stone provided the person's Sun is not located in an unfriendly or inauspicious sign and/or house position in their sidereal horoscope.
NOTE: Fine, natural gemstones do indeed "strengthen" or magnify the influence of their associated planets. Therefore, lucky planets = lucky gems. A person who is unwilling to perform these meritorious acts should not use gems for unlucky planets.
IMPORTANT: Which ever planetary gemstone you choose must be free of visible flaws in order to properly transmit beneficial astral energy. The gemstone must be flawless.
There are few gemstones like Blue Sapphire which has to be worn with utmost precaution after having shown your horoscope to a qualified astrologer and trial .
In my next article I shall share it with you all the rituals of wearing these gemstones . As gemstones come into full strenght after it is purified and propiliated with mantra's.
GEMS ARE GODS GIFT TO NATURE AND IF YOU ARE LUCKY TO HAVE WORN A SUITABLE LUCKY GEM THAT IS GODS GIFT TO YOU . NOT ALL ARE FORTUNATE TO UNDERSTAND THE EXTRA ORDINARY POWER OF THESE GEMSTONES .

Predictions using Vimshottari Dasha
Prediction about any event in an astrology chart is done by looking at either transits of planets (gochara) or by referring to a dasha period. Dasha period system is the more important of prediction systems in use. There are various dasha periods used within Indian Astrology - Vimshottari, Sodashottari, Dwadashattari, Ashtottari etc. Within these dasha systems also, Vimshottari dasha system is marked as the most important one in the ancient texts. The birth chart application in this site displays the Vimshottari dasha.
Vimshottari means 120. The dasha is called as such because of the period of effect of various planets adds up to 120. Dasha periods are always calculated according to the position of Moon in the chart. Janma Nakshatra therefore plays an important part in calculating the starting dasha period in the chart, which is determined by the lord of the nakshatra that the Moon falls in at the time of birth.
The main dasha period is called the mahadasha. This period is further divided into sub periods - antardasha and further sub periods - pratyantar dasha, sukshama dasha and finally the prana dasha. Without going into details of how these periods are calculated, if the span of the main period is of order of years, the duration of prana dasha is of the order of days or even hours. Errors in recording the time of birth are magnified quite a lot while calculating these innermost dasha periods. It is a pretty good reason for astrologers not to use sukshama dasha and prana dasha while making predictions.
Results from various planets are arrived at by looking at their natural or acquired traits in the chart. In their own or friendly house or navamsha, planets give good results. Similar results should be expected from planets that are have shadbala, vargottama or in a square or a trine position from lagna or Janma rashi. Planets involved in various yogas give results as described in the yoga. Debilitated planets, planets in enemy signs, naturally cruel planets give bad results during their dasha periods. Generally speaking, all planets do not give good results towards the end of their dasha periods.
Effects of various planetary combinations (yogas), whether good or bad, rajyogas or dhana yogas or nirdhana yoga etc. and corresponding predictions should be looked at from dasha periods of the associated planets. Essentially, the laws of :
•characteristics of planets in the chart,
•friendship between planets,
•yogas,
•strength of planets and
•retrogression
are the classical ones, some of which we have discussed earlier in this site and read in the books. Please refer to them while trying to make predictions for a particular period in a person’s life.
For ascertaining results related to affairs of a particular house or bhava, the lord of the house, planets situated in the house and those influencing the house by a drishti are considered important. This is required to predict an event in a person’s life - e.g. job, change of place, marriage and birth of children. Let us take an example of child birth. Fifth house (and also the 9th house, by principles of bhavat-bhavam) either from Lagna or Moon is important for children and childbirth. In the period of 5th house lord, putrakaraka, and a benefic planet affecting 5th house, one can expect childbirth in a family. In the period of malefic planets, e.g. Saturn or Rahu or a lord of a malefic house affecting fifth house, it will be difficult for a couple to have children, even if all other putrakaraka elements in the chart are really strong.
When antardasha and other sub-periods are looked at, combination and relationships between various period lords also come into picture. If the mahadasha lord and sub-period lord are friends either naturally or temporally in a chart, we should see good results. A 5/9 relationship, i.e. when two planets are situated in 5th and 9th position from each other, is considered auspicious. Similarly, a 2/12 or 6/8 relationship between the planets is not considered good when the dasha period operates.
All the planets that may influence a house will give their effect as main dasha period rulers or one of antardasha rulers. Per Dr. Raman, antardasha rulers are more important in giving result. When both rulers affect a house, the results should be considered complete. When main dasha ruler does not affect the house in any way but inner dasha ruler does, the results are less and limited. When only the outer dasha ruler is concerned with the house and antardasha ruler is not, the results will be extremely limited
Here you will be introduced to the terminology of Hindu astrology to enable you to comprehend the system. The astronomy relevant to predictive astrology will be discussed in the first place.
ASTRONOMICAL TERMINOLOGY
ECLIPTIC : Ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun.
ZODIAC & ASTROLOGY
Zodiac is an imaginary belt in the heavens extending to 9º on both sides of ecliptic containing 12 signs of 30º each. The first sign starts from 0º of the sign Aries (Mesha) and extends to 30º. Each degree can be divided into 60 minutes, and each minute can be divided into 60 seconds for the purpose of precision in calculations.
From the earth, the signs appear to be moving in a clockwise motion. The earth has two revolutions: one around the Sun which is completed in 365,25 days, and the other around its own axis which is completed in 24 hours. Due to earth's movement around the Sun, when the Sun is viewed in the background of the zodiac it appears from the earth that the Sun moves/rotates at the speed of 1º per day in an anti-clockwise direction. The other revolution of the earth i.e. around its own axis causes rise of all the 12 signs in the horizon or east in a period of 24 hours.
The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras (constellations) consisting of groups of fixed stars. The names and extent of nakshatras in zodiac are being separately indicated in the table appended at the end of the book.
EQUINOX:
Equinox is the time when the Sun apparently crosses the equator and the day and the night are equal. It is believed that when the Sun touches its equinoctial point of zero degree of Aries, the earth moves westward with reference to a particular constellation. The zodiac seen or measured from the beginning of Aries from the westward moving equinoctial point is known as moving or tropical zodiac. When zero degree of Aries is reckoned from a particular star, the same is known as fixed or sidereal zodiac. The Vedic system of Astrology uses the concept of fixed zodiac and that is why the Sun enters Aries almost on identical dates every year. In the Vedic system of Astrology, when we are speaking of various signs we are actually speaking about the fixed constellations with the same name. The Vedic system of Astrology is known as Nirayana System.
AYANAMSA :
The ayanamsa is the distance between the fixed and the moving zodiacs.
SOLAR TIME :
We measure time based on the concept of the solar day. It is defined as an average time period of the successive passages of the Sun over a given meridian. It is exactly 24 hours and is known as the mean solar day.
SIDEREAL TIME :
The time required for a 360 degree rotation of the earth around its axis, causing a given star in the sky to return to the same position in relation to the earth is known as the sidereal day and this period is about 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.
PLANETARY LONGITUDES
Planetary longitude is the angular distance measured eastward on the ecliptic from the starting point of the fixed zodiac and it gives the apparent position of the planet in a particular sign at a given time.
LONGITUDES
Longitude is the angular distance of any place on the earth's surface, east or west of a standard meridian (e.g. that of Greenwich), measured in degrees up to 180º east or west, or in units of time (1 hour = 15º). With the help of the longitude of a particular place with reference to Greenwich (0º), we calculate the local mean time for that place. As the earth rotates from west to east (anti-clockwise), those places east of Greenwich will be ahead of Greenwich Time and those to the west will be behind Greenwich Time. For each degree of longitude, there is a difference of four minutes in time.
LATITUDE
Latitude is the angular distance on its meridian of any place of the earth's surface from the equator. It is measured in degrees and minutes from the equator towards either the North Pole or the South Pole. The equator represents 0 degree latitude. Latitudes are thus lines drawn parallel to the equator.
Note:Even if you find it difficult to understand astronomical terms, you can proceed with further study. The lack of clear understanding of the astronomical terminology will not create hurdles in your understanding of the Predictive Astrology. Predictive Astrology and Astronomy are two different sciences. Predictive Astrology is based on Astronomy but the deep knowledge of Astronomy is not at all necessary for predictive analysis.
GENERAL TERMINOLOGY
NATAL CHART/BIRTH HOROSCOPE
Natal chart or radical chart or horoscope or natal positions are the positions of the ascendant and planets in various signs as noted for the time of the birth. Natal positions, therefore, are fixed. The planetary positions noted with reference to a particular chart for subsequent periods are known as transits or transit positions. .
PLANETARY CONJUNCTION
Conjunction is the apparent coincidence or proximity of two or more celestial objects as viewed from the earth. The conjunction can be exact or close. If the difference in longitudes happens to be less than one degree, the resulting conjunction is known as an exact conjunction. If the difference in longitudes is within five degrees, the same is known as a close conjunction.
PLANETARY ASPECT
The aspects are partial and full. In the Vedic system of Astrology, we are concerned with only full aspects. Each planet is believed to aspect fully the seventh house, reckoned from the placement of the former.
In addition to this i.e. the seventh aspect, planets posited outside the orbit of the earth as well as Rahu and Ketu have additional special full aspects as under:
a) Saturn aspects third and tenth houses from its location.
b) Mars aspects fourth and eight houses from its location.
c) Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu aspect fifth and ninth houses from their location.
Planets influence other houses/planets aspected by them favorably or unfavorably, depending upon their functional nature in the horoscope. The principle of exact or close aspect is identical to exact or close conjunction i.e. when a planet casts its aspect on another planet(s) or on the most effective point of house(s) within an orb of one degree, the aspect is known as an exact aspect. If the difference in planetary longitudes is within five degrees, then the aspect is known as a close aspect.
The conjunctions or aspects with more than five degrees of longitudinal difference are wide conjunctions or aspects. These do not have permanent impact in life except the short lived transit influences on the planets involved in wide conjunctions or aspects. The wide aspects give their results in later part of life, say around 60 years or after.
The aspect of the planet will be effective corresponding to the strength of the planet. If the aspecting planet is weak due to any reason including debilitation its effectiveness will be weak and limited.
The close aspect of a functional malefic will act as a damaging force and the close aspect of a functional benefic will act as a helping force.
GENERAL AND PARTICULAR SIGNIFICATIONS OF PLANETS
The general significations of a planet mean the aspects ruled by that planet. For example, the Sun rules father, status of the native, heart, digestive system, etc., irrespective of the lordship of the Sun in a particular nativity. The particular significations of a planet mean the significations of its mooltrikona house, the significations of its natal house and the significations of its transiting house i.e. the house where its mooltrikona sign is placed, the house where the planet is placed in the natal chart and the house where the planet is placed in transit.
The results of the significations of a weak planet fructify with delay and suffer whenever that weak planet is afflicted due to close aspect or conjunction with any functional malefic planet. The natal affliction causes damages in the entire sub-periods of the weak planet and the afflicting planets while the transit affliction cause short term damages during that effective transit influence.
PLANETARY AVASTHAS (STATES)
The planetary avasthas are the conditions in which a planet is placed. The prominent avasthas and the results produced are as under :
a) INFANCY: Whenever the longitude of a planet in a particular sign is less than 5 degrees, it is said to be in the state of infancy. Such a planet is incapable of fully promoting/protecting its general and particular significations.
b) OLD AGE: Whenever the longitude of a planet in a particular sign is more than 25 degrees, it is said to be in the state of old age. Such a planet is incapable of fully promoting/protecting its general and particular significations.
c) OWN SIGN: A planet in its own sign is treated as strong and is capable of generating the expected results, provided it is otherwise strong.
The own signs of various planets are as under:
PLANET: OWN SIGN
SUN : LEO
MOON : CANCER
MARS : ARIES, SCORPIO
MERCURY: GEMINI, VIRGO
JUPITER : SAGITTARIUS, PISCES
VENUS : TAURUS, LIBRA
SATURN : CAPRICORN, AQUARIUS
d) MOOLTRIKONA SIGNS : : A planet in its mooltrikona (MT) sign is treated as very powerful, provided it is otherwise strong.
Under the Systems' Approach, the mooltrikona signs of various planets are as under:
PLANET MOOLTRIKONA SIGN
SUN :L EO
MOON : CANCER
MARS : ARIES
MERCURY: VIRGO
JUPITER : SAGITTARIUS
VENUS : LIBRA
SATURN : AQUARIUS
.
e) EXALTATION: The planets are in the state of exaltation in particular signs and give good results by promoting/protecting their general and particular significations, provided they are otherwise strong.
The exaltation signs of various planets are as under :
PLANET EXALTATION SIGN
SUN ARIES
MOON TAURUS
MARS CAPRICORN
MERCURY VIRGO
JUPITER CANCER
VENUS PISCES
SATURN LIBRA
RAHU TAURUS
KETU SCORPIO
f) DEBILITATION: The planets are in the state of debilitation in particular signs, and therefore weak, failing to fully protect/promote their general and particular significations. Rather, there can be deterioration in their ruling sub-periods.
The debilitation signs of various planets are as follows:
PLANET DEBILITATION SIGN
SUN LIBRA
MOON SCORPIO
MARS CANCER
MERCURY PISCES
JUPITER CAPRICORN
VENUS VIRGO
SATURN ARIES
RAHU SCORPIO
KETU TAURUS
IMPACT OF PLANETS IN FRIENDLY SIGNS: When planets occupy the signs of their friendly planets, they are happy and feel themselves free for producing results, if they are otherwise strong. The Sun, the Moon and Mars are friends and Jupiter is their preceptor. Saturn, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu are friends and Venus is their preceptor.
IMPACT OF PLANETS IN INIMICAL SIGNS: When planets occupy signs of their enemies, they do not find themselves comfortable to produce results expected of them. However, any sign from where particular planet aspects its own mooltrikona sign is an exception to this rule and a planet in such a state does not find itself restricted to produce results.
DISPOSITOR:
According with Systems’ Approach, the dispositor is a planet in whose mooltrikona sign another planet is located in the natal chart. Suppose in a natal chart the Sun is placed in the sign Libra ruled by Venus. In this case Venus will be the dispositor of the Sun. No planet which is in a non- mooltrikona sign will have a dispositor i.e. the planet(s) in Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces have no dispositor. If a planet is posited in Aries, its dispositor would be Mars; if a planet is posited in Cancer, its dispositor would be the Moon; if a planet is posited in Leo, its dispositor would be the Sun; if a planet is posited in Virgo, its dispositor would be Mercury; if a planet is posited in Libra, its dispositor would be Venus; if a planet is posited in Sagittarius, its dispositor would be Jupiter; and if a planet is posited in Aquarius, its dispositor would be Saturn
g) COMBUSTION: Whenever a planet comes very near to the Sun, it is divested of its brightness (luster). The said state is called combustion. While in the state of combustion, the planets fail to fully protect/promote their general and particular significations. If such a planet is weak on other accounts too, the significations ruled by them do not even take birth.
The planets are said to be combust when they are within the below mentioned degrees on either side of the sun.
MOON 12 DEGREES
MARS 17 -DO-
MERCURY 14 -DO-
VENUS 10 -DO-
JUPITER 11 -DO-
SATURN 15 -DO-
Frequently Asked Questions
PLANETARY COMBUSTION
1. If the Sun is a functional benefic planet, is the combust planet always considered weak?
Let us first understand the combustion as a concept. Whenever a planet comes very near to the Sun, it is divested of its brightness (luster). The said state is called combustion. While in the state of combustion, the planets lack power to protect and promote the significations/houses ruled by them. If such a planet is weak on other accounts too, the significations ruled by them do not even take birth. The planets are said to be combust when they are within the below mentioned degrees on either side of the Sun.
When both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and are closely conjunct, we have to see their two roles distinctively. Firstly, as the lords of the two auspicious houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Sun. Secondly, the role of a combust planet. The combust planet is considered as a weak planet but in case the Sun and planet(s) involved are functional benefic planets, the weakness of the combust planet(s) is operative only at the time of natal or transit afflictions.
2. Can we call the combust planet "Weak"?
Yes. The weakness due to combustion gives high and low tides in life and need astral strength for the planets to enable them to fight natal and / or transit afflictions.
3. We understand that when combust, a planet will transfer its significations to the Sun. Right? Does that mean that if, say, the lord of the sixth gets combust, the Sun will take on its qualities of dispute, conflict, and injury, even if their orb of conjunction is more than 6 degrees?
If a functional malefic planet closely influences any other planet or the Sun, a functional malefic planet will certainly color the significations of the planet under its influence, negatively.
4. Is there ever a time when the transit influence continues for a longer duration?
Generally, the maximum limit of transit influences is around four months when Rahu/Ketu axis is stationary.
5. As for the Sun, to what extent the influence of the combust planet helps as the combust planet will be weak and not in a position to help the Sun?
When both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and are closely conjunct, one should see their role as the lords of the two houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Sun.
6. In a situation, where the dispositor of the Sun is combust, the Sun indirectly hurting itself by causing combustion to its own dispositor, would there be more weakness to both dispositor of the Sun and Sun itself, if Sun was a functional malefic planet for the ascendant in question?
That is right.
h) AFFLICTED PLANETS: The afflictions to the planets or houses are caused by the close conjunction or aspect of the functional malefic planets in a nativity. Whenever a planet/house is already weak for any other reason and is under the close influence of any functional malefic, it is treated as an afflicted planet/house. But when the planet/house is not weak for other reasons, it can be considered afflicted either under the exact influence of a functional malefic for normal afflictions or under the orb of influence of two degrees for special/multiple afflictions, becoming a weak planet/house for that reason. So whenever any planet/house is afflicted, it becomes weak not being capable of fully protecting/promoting its general and particular significations. The significations of the houses having mooltrikona sign of an afflicted planet are harmed more when such planets are already weak for other reasons.
SEVERELY AFFLICTED PLANETS
The planets which are weak on multiple counts and are under the exact affliction of functional malefic planets, are called severely afflicted planets. A severe affliction to any weak natal planet by Ketu or MMP and especially to the Sun, Mercury, Mars and Saturn makes the planet vulnerable to a paralytic stroke besides causing other problems.
"LEARN ASTROLOGY - STRENGTH OF PLANETS"
Strong Planets
A strong natal planet protects and promotes its general significations and the significations of its mooltrikona house. Any planet is considered strong when its longitude is between 05º to 25º in a particular sign and it is not in the state of weakness. It can increase its strength further if:
a) it is young, i.e. its longitude is between 10º to 20º in a particular sign.
b) it occupies own or good navamsa and other divisions.
c) it is under the close influence of the functional benefic planets.
d) it occupies its exaltation, mooltrikona or own sign.
e) it closely influences the most effective point of the house.
The results of planets placed in the Sun-like houses that is the second, third and ninth houses get magnified.
Any planet has capacity to bless the native with its results if its natal strength is at least 60% and it is unafflicted. In such a situation the results may come with some delay and of slightly lower order. With the help of the strengthening measures - gemstones or Kavach - the strength of the planets, where it is less than 60%, can be brought to the level of 60% so that it blesses the native with the significations ruled by it.
One can (i) strengthen the weak planets by way of a Kavach if the planetary strength is between 50% to 60%; (ii) strengthen the weak planets by way of a special power kavach if the planetary strength is between 35% to 50%; and (iii) strengthen the weak planets by way of a special power kavach cum gemstone pendant if the planetary strength is lower than 35%.
Weak Planets
A weak natal planet is not capable of fully protecting/promoting its general significations and the significations of its mooltrikona house during the course of its sub-periods and during the triple transit functional malefic influences. A planet becomes weak when:
1) The most effective point of its mooltrikona sign is afflicted by a functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree.
2) The most effective point of its house of placement is afflicted by a functional malefic planet, within an orb of one degree for mooltrikona signs or within an orb of five degrees for non-mooltrikona signs.
3) It is conjunct or aspected by any functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree.
4) It is combust due to its nearness to the Sun.
5) It occupies malefic houses from the ascendant, except if in its own mooltrikona sign.
6) It occupies its sign of debilitation.
7) It is in the state of infancy or old-age.
8) It occupies its debilitated sign in navamsa.
9) It occupies the mooltrikona sign of a weak planet. However, its strength would be in proportion to the strength of its dispositor.
10) It is the Moon within 72 degrees either side of the Sun. However, this is a minor weakness.
In case of special or multiple afflictions, the otherwise "strong" planet is considered afflicted (and weak) even when the orb of affliction is of two degrees.
The affliction is special or multiple i.e. when it comes from:
1) a conjunction with/ aspect from the most malefic planet,
2) an aspect from a functional malefic planet placed in a dusthana,
3) a conjunction with Rahu or Ketu (Rahu-Ketu axis)
4) an aspect of a functional malefic planet afflicted by other(s) functional malefic planet,
5) more than one functional malefic planet at the same time.
LOSS OF STRENGTH BY PLANETS a) A planet will lose strength to the extent of 75% if its mooltrikona sign house is afflicted.
b) A weak planet placed in an afflicted house will lose strength to the extent of 75%.
c) An otherwise strong planet placed in a non mooltrikona sign afflicted house will lose strength to the extent of 50%. Such a planet may give good results in the first place and will cause setbacks later.
d) A closely afflicted weak planet will lose strength to the extent of 75%.
e) A closely afflicted otherwise strong planet will lose strength to the extent of 50%. Such a planet will give good results in the first place and will cause setbacks later.
f) A planet becoming weak due to close combustion will lose strength to the extent of 75% if the Sun is a functional malefic planet. Where the Sun is a functional benefic and it causes combustion to another planet, the planet will become 50% weak for the purpose of transit affliction. A combust planet in its sign of debilitation and placed in a malefic house will have only 10% power.
g) When planets are placed in the malefic houses, they generally lose strength by 50% besides suffering through the significations of the malefic house. The placement in the sixth house can involve the person in disputes, debts and can cause ill health. The placement in the eighth house can cause serious obstructions for the significations ruled by the planet. The placement in the twelfth house can cause expenses and losses for the significations of the planet.
h) When planets are placed in their signs of debilitation, they lose strength by 50%. When planets are placed in their signs of debilitation in birth chart and navamsa, they lose strength by 75%.
i) If in Rasi chart the planet is badly placed and at the same time debilitated in navamsa it would lose strength to the extent of 60%.
j) A badly placed planet in its sign of debilitation will lose its power by 75%.
k) A planet debilitated in navamsa would lose power by 25%.
The results of planets placed in the Sun-like houses that is the second, third and ninth houses get magnified.
Any planet has capacity to bless the native with its results if its natal strength is at least 60% and it is unafflicted. In such a situation the results may come with some delay and of slightly lower order. DISPOSITOR
According with Systems' Approach, the dispositor is a planet in whose mooltrikona sign another planet is located in the natal chart. If a planet is posited in Aries, its dispositor would be Mars; if a planet is posited in Cancer, its dispositor would be the Moon; if a planet is posited in Leo, its dispositor would be the Sun; if a planet is posited in Virgo, its dispositor would be Mercury; if a planet is posited in Libra, its dispositor would be Venus; if a planet is posited in Sagittarius, its dispositor would be Jupiter; and if a planet is posited in Aquarius, its dispositor would be Saturn.
DIVISIONAL CHARTS
The divisional charts (DCs) are the charts which are drawn by division of houses for specialized analysis of a particular signification; for example navamsa for considering general fortune and marriage, etc., and dasamsa for considering professional aspects in a nativity. The methodology of study of the divisional charts has been brought out in the revised edition of author's book "HOW TO STUDY DIVISIONAL CHARTS" which readers may study after they have learnt the system in general.
YOGAKARAKA PLANETS
Yogakaraka planets are those planets which own a kendra (angle) and a trikona (trine) in a particular nativity. These yogakarakas are first rate functional benefics and, when strong, produce excellent results by their close association/aspects with any particular planet/house.
The following planets become yogakarakas for the ascendant (lagnas) mentioned against each :-
PLANET ASCENDANT
MARS CANCER & LEO
VENUS CAPRICORN & AQUARIUS
SATURN TAURUS & LIBRA
SIGNIFICATORS
In addition to ruling houses containing their signs, the planets also act as significators for various houses. The various planets act as significators for the houses indicated against each :-
SUN 1st, 9th &10th houses
MOON 4th house
MARS 3rd &10th houses
MERCURY 6th & 10th houses
JUPITER 2nd, 5th, 9th & 11th houses
VENUS 4th, 7th & 12th houses
SATURN Ayushkaraka (longevity) i.e. for the 8th house.
How to Judge/Interpret a Horoscope
HOW TO JUDGE/INTERPRET A HOROSCOPE"
We judge the horoscope through an integrated analytical technique as per Systems' Approach. But before that let us bring out the methodology for a quick overall view of the horoscope.
As a golden principle to avoid disgrace to the science and the astrologers, no attempt for prediction should be made until and unless the horoscope has been cast properly with divisional charts, the planetary strengths have been identified and the operating planetary periods and sub-periods have been worked out.
The classics opine that the predictions made by astrologers well versed in calculating planetary longitudes and proficient in astrological lore cannot go wrong. We believe the predictions made after due consideration of the strength of planets, prevalent sub-periods, etc., with a peaceful mind have greater probability of coming true.
PRIME FACTORS:
First of all, the position of the lord of ascendant and the ascendant is to be seen as the whole activity revolves around the ascendant. The lord of the ascendant would be applicable only to those ascendants which contain mooltrikona sign of a planet, but in all cases we have to see the influences of the various planets on the first house either by placement or conjunction/aspect over its most effective point. All the results of the chart are to be felt by the native concerned and in case the ascendant is weak or the longevity is less, the various effects of the chart would be of no use to the native. Next comes the strength of the Moon as only a sound mind can provide the native opportunities for rise in life. If the Moon is strong and has the help of a favorable Mercury and Jupiter, the native can make best use of opportunities available to him. The Moon is also the significator of mother and, if strong, it would bless the native with motherly comforts for proper development of life. Then comes the Sun and the ninth or fourth house, whichever contains first a mooltrikona sign, both factors related with father, who supports the native in the early years of life so to say till the child is competent to lead his/her own life. If the Sun, the ninth house and the fourth house are weak and afflicted, the father of the native has short life or lacks the power to support the native. In fact, if all these factors i.e. the ascendant, the Moon, the Sun, the ninth house and the fourth house are strong in a nativity, the native would get opportunities for advancement in life; so to say he/she has the capacity and chance to learn and to make use of it. Where there is no mooltrikona sign in the ninth and fourth houses, as happens with Libra ascendant, we examine about the father from the Sun and the influences on both houses.
The horoscopic influences are studied through the natal conjunctions, aspects and placements. The conjunctions and aspects help us in identifying the auspicious and inauspicious planetary configurations. The placement of a planet in a particular house links the significations of its mooltrikona house with the significations of its house of placement. A planet placed in a malefic house indicates suffering for the significations ruled by the said planet in the nativity.
The integrated analytical technique will focus on a stepwise approach:
Step I
Double check the correctness of birth data. If any doubt subsists, rectification should be done before anything else.
Step II
After the horoscope has been cast properly with divisional charts, identify the functional nature of the planets from the ascendant, the most effective point, the most malefic planet and the most benefic planet. Underline the functional malefic planets.
Step III
Find out the strength of planets, check to see if any planet is weak for several reasons, identify the natal auspicious and inauspicious close conjunctions/aspects and encircle planets/MEPs closely afflicted, identify the natal placements and have a comprehension of the weak and strong areas of the chart.
Step IV
Find out the current operating dasas (the main and sub-period lords) for the date in question. Identify the house where the mooltrikona sign of the sub-period lord is placed and the natal/transit houses occupied by the sub-period lord. In this approach we will primarily consider the sub-period lord.
Step V
For the transits on the date in question, find out the natal and transit strength of the sub-period lord and determine the triple transit triggering influence i.e. from Transit to Natal, Transit to Transit, and Natal to Transit (not forgetting the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu). Identify also forthcoming TTT auspicious and inauspicious close influences.
Step VI
Assess longevity: If a mooltrikona sign rises in the ascendant, pay special attention to the longevity by seeing the strength of planets and the functional nature of the operating planets i.e. the main and sub-period lords. Most of the planets being weak and afflictions to the ascendant or to the ascendant lord with operating period of functional malefics give short life. Similarly placed planets with operating period of functional benefics give middle span of life. Weak planets keep the significations to a lower level, if unafflicted. Severely afflicted planets cause tragedies or fatal diseases. The operating periods reduce/increase the impact. Pay special attention to the transit strength of operating planets.
For detailed study of the aspect of longevity, the readers may refer to How to Judge Longevity.
Step VII
By using the dasas and transits, combine these to see the current and future trends. Make your predictions for the different planetary periods.
Step VIII
Prescribe the astrological/jyotish remedies.
Note: For various aspects of life you may refer to “Order of Significations” list. This list will assist you to identify the primary and secondary significators.
The general assessment of the chart will indicate the significations of the houses/planets which will prominently surface in life depending upon the strength of planets. The specific trend results will be indicated at any particular time by the operating sub-period lord depending upon its functional nature and natal and transit strength. For analysing any particular significations, strength of the house, the lord of the house and the significator of the house is considered. If the ascendant is having a mooltrikona sign and its lord is weak, the other weak planets show that the physical parts of the body ruled by such weak planets will suffer.
For the house-wise analysis of horoscopes please refer to Learn Astrology Fundamentals Section.. For the purpose of illustrations, we will take up some specific aspects of life hereunder, which will give the readers a practical insight for analysing a chart. The term, “the lord of the house” during the course of discussions on case studies refers always to the house where the mooltrikona sign of the said planet is placed i.e. its mooltrikona house.

"IMPORTANCE OF DIVISIONAL CHARTS IN ASTROLOGY/HOROSCOPE READING"
WHAT IS A DIVISIONAL CHART?
First of all let us understand what a divisional chart or a varga chart is? A divisional chart is erected by dividing a sign into parts. For example, if we want to prepare a divisional chart for one-ninth part of a sign (Rasi), we will divide the 30 degrees that is the extent of a sign in nine equal parts of 3 degrees and 20 minutes each. We have a standard methodology for reckoning the signs of natal planets (planetary position as noted at the time of birth) as well as the rising degree of the ascendant in the divisional chart for ninth part, which is known as the navamsa chart. We will not go into the details of preparing the divisional charts here. You can make the divisional charts with the help of the tables 3 to 15 given at the end of this book. We will see the natal sign and degree of a planet and see its corresponding position in the divisional chart. For example, if an ascendant is rising in Virgo 23 degree, its position in decante would be Taurus; in Turyamsa it would be Gemini; in Panchamsa it would be Leo; in Sapthamsa it would be Leo; and so on and so forth. The natal sign is to be read in columns and natal degrees are to be read in rows. The corresponding number reckoned with the help of the column position and row position represents the sign number in the concerned divisional chart.
IMPORTANT DIVISIONAL CHARTS
For cluster-wise detailed analysis of the horoscope, we have to study the divisional charts. These are studied for two purposes. Firstly, we study it to see the strength of a planet by observing its placement in various divisions. If it is placed in its own sign, its mooltrikona sign or its exaltation sign in most of the divisions, it is treated to be strong. Its placement in most of the divisions in its sign of debilitation renders it weak. A planet which is weak in the natal chart does not improve its position by occupying benefic, exaltation or own sign in the divisions. However, wearing a stone or a yantra (Kavach) in a duly selected auspicious time can strengthen those planets, which are weak but functionally favorable for a person. In this book, we will treat planets Rahu, Ketu and those whose mooltrikona signs fall in the houses sixth, eighth and twelfth from the natal ascendant as functional malefic planets for the owner of the chart. The sign Cancer is treated as the mooltrikona sign of the Moon under the Systems' Approach for Interpreting Horoscopes.
Secondly, the divisional charts are studied for identifying the results of a particular sector of life by studying the corresponding divisional chart along with the concerned house in the natal (birth) chart. Like if we want to study the general fortune, we will study the ninth house and the divisional chart known as navamsa (D-IX) along with the natal (birth) chart of the person..
SIGNIFICATIONS OF THE MAIN DIVISIONAL CHARTS
From the various divisional charts we analyse and examine the significations indicated against each:
HORA (D-II) WEALTH
DECANTE (D-III) HAPPINESS FROM YOUNGER BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND INITIATIVE
TURYAMSA (D-IV) NET ASSETS
SHASHTHAMSA (D-VI) HEALTH & TYPE OF DISEASES
SAPTHAMSA (D-7) PROGENY AND HAPPINESS THEREFROM
ASHTHAMSA (D-VIII) LONGEVITY
NAVAMSA (D-IX) GENERAL FORTUNE, MARITAL HAPPINESS, RELIGIOUS PURSUITS
DASAMSA (D-X) PROFESSION, FAME & DEEDS
DWADASAMSA (X-II) PARENTS
CHATURVIMSAMSA (D-XXIV) EDUCATION
('D' STANDS FOR DIVISION)
A planet, which occupies the same sign in rasi and navamsa charts, is called vargottamma. Chapter 3(13) of Saravali indicates good results to planets in vargottamma amsa. But the views of the author are that a vargottamma planet shows favorable results only if such a planet is strong in the rasi chart.
The weak planets in D-I do not improve their strength by being well-placed in navamsa or other vargas.
The planets are considered weak for all purposes if they occupy debilitated navamsa and are considered weak for specific purposes if they occupy the corresponding debilitated amsa. For example, if any planet is strong in rasi and navamsa, but debilitated in dasamsa, it makes it weak only for the purposes of the 10th house. But being debilitated in navamsa makes it weak regarding all its general and particular significations.
The planetary relationships in a horoscope are generated through close conjunctions, close aspects and placements. When two or more functional benefic planets form close relationship they generate good results relating to the houses where the mooltrikona signs of these planets are placed. This type of relationship caused due to the close conjunction/aspect is known as yoga. If two functional malefics form a close relationship they cause an inauspicious yoga and destroy the results of the house ruled by the functional malefic planets. If one functional benefic and one functional malefic planet form a close relationship this causes an inauspicious yoga that destroys the results of the house ruled by the functional benefic planet. When a functional benefic planet occupies a malefic house, this causes yoga for misfortune related to the significations of the house containing the mooltrikona sign of the said functional benefic planet. Similarly, when a functional malefic planet closely influences the most effective point of a house, it destroys the significations of the said house.
RASI CHARTS AT TIMES CAN BE MISLEADING
Those houses are considered strong which are occupied or are closely aspected by their own strong lords and functional benefic planet(s) and are not under the close influence of the functional malefic planets.
Those houses are considered strong which are occupied or are closely aspected by their own strong lords and functional benefic planet(s) and are not under the close influence of the functional malefic planets.
A strong planet protects and promotes its general significations and the house where its mooltrikona sign falls. Any planet is considered strong when it is not in the state of weakness. It can increase its strength if:
a) it is in young age, that is its longitude is between 10º to 20º in a particular sign.
b) it occupies own or good navamsa and other divisions.
c) it is under the close influence of the functional benefics.
d) it occupies its exaltation, mooltrikona or own sign.
e) it closely influences the most effective point of the house.
We come across charts where in spite of certain houses being apparently strong in the main natal chart, the natives do not get the desired results. How can we identify such combinations and offer correct predictions? The answer lies in analyzing the concerned house of a main chart in association with the study of the corresponding divisional chart. In fact any prediction without its being subjected to test in the relevant divisional chart, stands less chances of its becoming true. The study of various houses, in fact, gives the clues to trends in life whereas the indications are delineated with the help of the strength of the operating sub-period lord in transit in particular and the various close conjunctions or close aspects formed by the transit planets in relation to the natal (birth) positions.
Date of Birth 10th January, 1976, 2010 Hours. Delhi.
The sign Cancer rises in the ascendant and Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are the functional malefic planets. In rasi chart when we consider parentage, it is the most effective point of the fourth house and significator for mother, which is more afflicted in comparison to the ninth house. The lord of the fourth house is well placed. The significator for father, the Sun, is badly placed and is under the exact affliction of Ketu. Besides, as per traditional classical approach, the ninth house is quite strong as it is occupied by its own lord, Jupiter, and does not have any malefic aspect on it.
As per Systems' Approach explained in the book even Jupiter is a functional malefic for this chart as its mooltrikona sign falls in the sixth house.
The significator for father is weak due to its placement in the sixth house and is afflicted by the close aspect of Ketu.
The analysis of navamsa and dwadasamsa makes the scene clear. In navamsa, Jupiter is debilitated and aspected by Rahu. In dwadasamsa, even though in its mooltrikona sign, Jupiter is aspected by Rahu. The significator for father, the Sun, is debilitated and aspected by Ketu in dwadasamsa and is conjunct with Ketu in navamsa. The ascendants of the navamsa and dwadasamsa are aspected by Ketu. Ketu is known as the planet of miseries. In D-I Rahu is closely conjunct with the most effective point of the fourth house. The Sun as significator for father and Venus as the lord of the fourth house become determinants for the father while Rahu and Ketu are the afflicting planets. The Moon, the significator for mother, occupies angular houses in the main chart and navamsa and its own sign in the dwadasamsa. In rasi, the Moon is closely afflicted by the aspect of the most malefic planet, Saturn,. In navamsa, the Moon is afflicted by the most malefic planet, Venus, and the functional malefic, Saturn. During the main period of Venus lord of the fourth house, indicating suffering to the mother due to Rahu's close affliction to the most effective point of the fourth house and in the sub-period of Rahu, the native lost his father at the age of eleven years. The death of the husband in prime youth is a serious setback to her mother.
Date of Birth 4th September, 1962, 2020 Hrs. Delhi.
The sign Pisces rises in the ascendant and the Sun, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu become functional malefic planets. In D-I the seventh house is occupied by its own lord, Mercury, in its sign of exaltation. But Mercury is weak as it is under the exact affliction of Ketu. The lord of the house of family, Mars, is strong and occupies angular position from the ascendant. The eighth house, the house of marital bond, is occupied by its own lord, Venus. The lords of second and eighth houses are not afflicted. The lord of the twelfth house, Saturn, is weak and closely conjunct with Ketu. The most effective points are not afflicted by any functional malefic. In spite of some positive combinations the marital bond could not survive.
In D-IX Saturn, being the lord of the ascendant in navamsa, is debilitated. Venus, the weak lord of the eighth house in D-I, is conjunct with Rahu and afflicted by Ketu and Mercury. Mercury is the lord of eighth house in D-IX. Mercury, the lord of the seventh house in rasi, is under the influence of Rahu-Ketu axis in navamsa. In D-IX almost all the houses related with marital happiness are either afflicted by placement/aspect of functional malefic planets or have their lords aspected by functional malefic planets.
The girl was married in June 1985, during the main period of functional malefic planet, Saturn, and the sub-period of the afflicted lord of the seventh house, Mercury. She faced numerous problems in her marital life, which ultimately ended in a divorce in the sub-period of the most malefic planet, Venus, afflicted in navamsa.
Male born 2nd October, 1990, 1119 Hrs. Delhi.
The sign Scorpio rises in the ascendant and Mars, Venus, Rahu and Ketu are the functional malefic planets. The ascendant is closely aspected by the functional malefic planet, Mars. The Moon strongly occupies an angle. Mercury is rendered weak due to its being in the state of infancy. There is no mooltrikona sign in the ascendant of decante, which is analyzed for delineating planetary influences for identifying the birth of younger brothers and the proper physical and mental growth of the native. Jupiter, the lord of the house of higher education in the main chart, is weak as its mooltrikona sign house is closely afflicted by Mars. The weak Jupiter is under the close affliction of Rahu and Ketu. Mars, its mooltrikona sign being in sixth house casts its functional malefic aspect closely on the ascendant and the second house. Venus, the ruling sub-period lord, rules inauspicious houses in both D-I and the decante chart and is in its sign of debilitation and combust in the rasi chart. The Sun is rendered weak due to the weakness of its dispositor and is malefically aspected by Rahu. Saturn, being well placed in D-I occupied the sixth house in D-III.
Because of malefic aspect to the most effective points of ascendant and the second house by the malefic lord of the sixth house, affliction of the lord of the second house and operating sub-period of the most malefic planet, Venus, the natural physical and mental growth of native was obstructed. The native turned out to be a Mongoloid, having retarded growth, suffering from dreaded diseases like pneumonia, congenital defects like hole in heart and enlarged heart, etc., and suffered from frequent fevers.
Female born November 21, 1964, 2100 Hrs. Delhi.
The native suffered on account of death of her husband within three years of her marriage and thereafter was involved in the litigation for the property of her husband. Her husband died in the sub-period of the fourth lord, Mercury, occupying the sixth house.
The sign Gemini rises in the ascendant and Rahu and Ketu are the functional malefic planets. In D-I Jupiter casts its close aspect on the seventh house, the house of spouse. Saturn occupies its own house, the house of fortune. The significator for marital life, Venus, occupies its mooltrikona sign in the fifth house. The lord of the house of family, the Moon, is well placed in the chart. The position appears to be quite OK except the close affliction of Rahu to the most effective points of the twelfth, fourth and eighth houses and that of Ketu to the most effective point of the second house. The position of Mercury, the lord of the fourth house in the sixth house, is indicative of conflicts regarding the assets of the native. But the unfortunate happening took place in the main period of seventh lord and the sub-period of the ninth lord.
Both the ninth and seventh lords of D-I join the badly placed debilitated Moon in navamsa and are aspected by Ketu, the most malefic planet. Rahu and Ketu occupy the angular positions in navamsa, which is not good. In D-I Mercury, as lord of fourth house placed in the sixth house, indicates the involvement of assets in life and domestic happiness in disputes.
Thus the study of divisional charts becomes necessary for clearly delineating the results of the various sectors of life through the identification of the real strength of planets in the D-charts.
REMEDIAL MEASURES
The propitiatory remedial measures should be recommended for the afflicting functional malefic planets.
SPECIAL DEMANDS ON ASTROLOGERS FOR TIMING OF EVENTS
The true benefit of predictive astrology can be enjoyed only if we are able to time the events. Modern life is quite fast and needs precise and correct decisions. The predictive competence is the synthesis and application of multiple valid principles of predictive astrology. Besides the study of the natal chart as brought out by the author, the study of divisional charts, transit influences and the application of astrological remedial measures play an important role. The propitiatory remedial measures are recommended for the afflicting functional malefic planets.
For comprehension of the three-tier transit influences, the readers may refer to my book, "How to Identify Significant Events". The methodology to studying the Divisional Charts is being detailed in Chapter 3 of this book. The accuracy of birth time remains the sole basis of analyzing a divisional chart with reliability.
During the course of the case studies in this book, the rising degree in the ascendant is treated as the most effective point of each house. Apart from the general impact of close conjunctions or aspects, it is the strength of the natal operating sub-period lord in transit that bestows the results. In case the natal operating sub-period lord is a functional benefic planet but is weak, it can bestow the desired results to a limited extent, even if the sub-period lord is strong in transit. For better results the strength of the weak natal benefic planet is required to be augmented. A strong natal operating sub-period lord, if weak in transit, fails to bestow the expected results.
To illustrate, I would cite a few examples for timing the events with the help of the principles discussed above.
Male born May 27, 1962, 0627 Hrs. Bombay.
This chart belongs to a former famous Indian test cricketer. When the author was introduced to this player as an astrologer in September 1986 in Calcutta, the latter gave his bio-data for predictions. With the help of the analysis of dasamsa (D-X), it was predicted that during the period between June, 1987 to January, 1988, there was very strong chance of his becoming skipper of Indian Cricket Team. This prediction involved two particular things: (1) there should be change in the Indian captaincy. At the time of prediction, there appeared to be no need; and (2) that this player would become the skipper. From December 87, the native was to run the sub-period of Mercury, the lord of the fifth house, in the main period of Saturn. In D-I Mercury is well-placed in the ascendant while in D-IX it is placed in the fourth house in Virgo.
As per SA, the sign Taurus rises in the ascendant and Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are the functional malefic planets. The native has good combinations in D-I like occupation of ascendant by the fourth and fifth lords and the placement of the lord of the house of initiatives and sports in the tenth house. The Sun is weak as its mooltrikona house and its house of placement are exactly afflicted by Jupiter and Ketu respectively but is well placed in the chart. The Moon's close conjunction with the most effective point of the tenth house is a significant factor in this case. The Sun is in its sign of exaltation in both D-IX and D-X. The Moon is vargottamma and occupies its own sign in D- X. Mercury is in its sign of exaltation in both D-IX.
The placement of Venus in the second house and Jupiter close to the most effective point of the tenth house is inauspicious from the Systems' Approach point of view and has caused many fluctuations in the career of this cricketer. Venus rules his health, financial position and strength for competition specially in sports. The good placement of Venus in the Sun-like house ruling status helped the native despite weakness. Both Jupiter and Saturn are otherwise strong planets but the placement in the afflicted houses makes them weak. In such situations the planets give short lived good results. Saturn is additionally under the exact influence of Rahu/Ketu axis. It will not be out of place to mention that his performance during the main and sub-period of Saturn was quite discouraging. Yet the sub-period of Mercury in the main period of Saturn could generate the good results for him and he had a short spell of Captaincy.
Female born November 20, 1960, 1120 Hrs. 83E20 25N37.
When the native was running the sub-period of Rahu in the main period of Venus, the author was contacted for timing the marriage and suggesting remedial measures for expediting the marriage. The sign Capricorn rises in the ascendant and the Sun, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu become functional malefic planets. The Moon is weak as it is placed in its sign of debilitation. Mercury is weak due to the weakness of its dispositor and is closely afflicted by Ketu. Venus is weak as it is badly placed and closely afflicted by the functional malefic planet, Jupiter. Saturn, as it is badly placed in the chart, becomes weak and closely afflicted by Rahu. Mars ruling the fourth house is weak as it is badly placed in the chart. In D-I the lord of the seventh house is in its sign of debilitation, it lacks brightness (paksha bala) and the significator for husband occupies twelfth house along with the lord of the house of family, Saturn. Venus also occupies twelfth house, all indicating weak position for promoting the marriage. Rahu/Ketu axis closely afflicts the most effective points of the houses pertaining to marital affairs.
In D-IX the position is not very much better. The lord of the twelfth house, Mars, occupies the ascendant. The lord of the seventh house of D-I occupies 9th house in D-IX, in the sign Capricorn. The Moon is aspected by two malefic lords of the navamsa and Rahu.
The position of main period lord in main chart is weak and the sub-period lord is placed in the eighth house. In D-IX, Rahu touches the significations of D-IX due to its placement in the fifth house and its aspect to D-IX ascendant and the Moon. The remedial measures for strengthening of the weak significators of marriage and for propitiation of Rahu and Ketu were suggested as they are causing affliction to the houses connected with marital affairs.
The marriage fructified in the sub-period of Rahu and main period of Venus. As main period of Venus, the lord of the tenth house, was in operation, the native was working as a lecturer in a private college. Venus, the lord of the tenth house of D-I, is well placed in D-X even though aspected by Ketu.
When the significators for marriage are utterly weak, marriage cannot be finalized and solemnized without strengthening the weak planets and propitiating the afflicting planets.
Female born December 6, 1952, 1300 Hrs. Delhi.
The native lost her husband on 1st August 1986, in the main period of Venus and sub-period of Rahu.
The sign Aquarius rises in the ascendant and the Moon, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu are functional malefic planets. In D-I, the lord of the seventh house occupies the tenth house and it is under the exact affliction of Ketu from the sixth house. Whenever the Sun is under the exact or very close affliction of Ketu the happiness from father, husband and male progeny is curtailed in the charts of females. The chart has inherent weakness due to placement of lords of the ninth and third houses in the twelfth house. The badly placed weak Mars is closely conjunct with Rahu in the twelfth house and is afflicted by the close aspect of the functional malefic planets, the Moon and Ketu.
In D-IX, the Moon is in its sign of debilitation and the seventh lord of the D-I is placed in the eighth house in association with Ketu. The location of main and sub-period lords in the twelfth house caused untold miseries to the native. Before death, the husband of the native suffered from a prolonged disease.
Male born December 18, 1951, .
The sign Sagittarius rises in the ascendant and the Moon, Rahu and Ketu become functional malefic planets. Mercury, the lord of the tenth house is combust, in old-age and placed in the twelfth house. The significator for the tenth house, the Sun is weak as it is in the state of infancy. Saturn, Mars and Jupiter are favorably placed in the angular houses. Saturn and Mars are weak due to the weakness of their dispositor. Both Saturn and Mars being lords of the third and fifth houses closely influence the most effective point of the tenth house. The influence of the lord of the fifth house on the tenth house or second house gives professional qualification. The most malefic planet, the Moon, exactly afflicts the most effective point of the second house, which rules the status, wealth and family. In D-IX, Mercury is in its sign of debilitation. The ascendant lord of D-X, the Moon is in an angular house in the D-X and is aspected not only by Mercury and Venus but also by Jupiter. These mixed effects blessed the native with the post of an engineer but due to the weakness of the tenth lord of the main chart, he faced problems from time to time in his job. During the sub-period of Mercury in the main period of Venus the native was involved in a vigilance enquiry and the promotion was denied to him. He was suggested strengthening measures for Mercury and the Sun and propitiatory remedial measures for the functional malefic planets. He got exonerated from the vigilance enquiry and was promoted in the main and sub-period of the ninth lord, the Sun.

LEARN ASTROLOGY - LESSON 90
"Divisional Chart : Navamsa"
Marriage is an institution for the continuance of mankind and for living together of the husband and wife in perfect harmony, both at mental and physical levels. In fact, it is one of the major factors required for the achievements in life, as it coincides with the age group of a person when one is fit to do anything constructive and at one's own. Before attaining the marriageable age one is in one's childhood followed by early youth, studying and grooming oneself under the guardianship of one's parents and making him/her ready for attempting to shoulder the burden of life and attaining the meaning of his life. The most active life of a person can be grouped between the years from 25 to 50. This is the time when one can do anything with zeal and for promoting not only one's own generation but for the growth of the society and the world, at large. He/she requires a permanent partner for deliberation and taking decisions in the form of a spouse, who caters to his/her physical needs also. The attainments of a person in life are mainly dependent on his/her successful married life. That is why in the horoscope format the house opposite the ascendant has been allotted for the marriage inter alia other things. All other houses i.e. karma (the house of actions) and general happiness of life are sidelined. So after the ninth and/or fourth house containing mooltrikona sign(s) and the ascendant which sustain the person in his early life, the next in importance stands the seventh house, the house of marriage. It is believed that a person, who is blessed with a peaceful and happy married life, can maintain mental equilibrium and contribute his/her share for the growth of society both in materialistic and spiritual fields.
The consideration of navamsa chart (the divisional chart for assessing marital happiness) is imperative along with the rasi chart. For detailed study of prime and secondary determinants of marriage, the readers may refer to my book, "How to Analyse Married Life."
The marriage can be termed both as bliss and bane. The strong placement of the prime and secondary determinant(s) of marriage and good position of these planets in navamsa with benefic influences on these provide the native with timely and happy marriage, making the life bliss. On the other hand if the determinants are weak the marriage becomes baneful on any of the following accounts:
1. The spouse may be ill-tempered.
2. The spouse may be frigid.
3. The spouse/self may lack good health.
4. The marriage may be considerably delayed.
5. The birth of children may be delayed/ children may suffer illness or early death/ lack of progeny.
6. Lack of mental compatibility.
7. Divorce/separation due to any of the foregoing factors individually or collectively in the unfavorable dasa/bhukti in operation.
8. The vacuum in life created by marriage being denied.
9. Separative forces associated with houses/significators of marriage.
Cent percent marital bliss is a rare phenomenon. However, there are cases where the discords in marital affairs are momentary. The astrology can be helpful to a large extent, in avoiding the circumstances leading to the baneful happenings by matching the horoscopes for mental compatibilities, supplementing the planetary drawbacks in the horoscope of intending matches and seeing whether operational periods will have any bad effect on the marital alliance. Although it is said that marriages are settled in heaven, yet there is lot of help that can be provided by astrology in the manner mentioned in the preceding sentence and suggestion of remedial measures for strengthening the weak planets, as well as, by performing propitiatory remedies for the afflicting functional malefic planets. There are numerable combinations mentioned in the classical texts on happy marriage, remarriage death of spouse etc. but these only fructify during the sub-periods of planets forming such combinations. Advance astrological advice for the impending circumstances provides mental strength to the natives for bearing the tension and strains.
I would cite a few cases where marital happiness had eluded the married partners because of the problems in some of the fields mentioned earlier in this chapter because of weak/afflicted/ill-placed and malefically associated significators.
Native born on 17th November, 1961, 1400 Hrs. 77E13 28N39 TZ 5.30 Hours.
The lord of the ascendant occupies the twelfth house in association with the debilitated Jupiter. The lord of the ascendant is additionally weak due to its being in the state of infancy. The lord of the seventh house, the Sun, too is in the state of infancy. The lord of the ninth house is closely conjunct with the lord of the eighth, Mercury, who is functionally malefic for the native.
Exalted Moon, who is the sixth lord in the main chart occupies the navamsa ascendant. Jupiter is associated with Rahu in navamsa.
In sapthamsa ascendant is occupied by its lord, the Moon, and afflicted by Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. The significator for children though occupying a friendly sign in sapthamsa is weak in the main chart.
The native is having inharmonious relations with his wife. He is totally selfish. His wife is so unhappy with him that she wanted to commit suicide. The native was married in the dasa of Saturn and sub-period of Jupiter. The onset of the main period of Mercury, ruling eighth and afflicting Venus, the ninth lord and significator for wife, the situation has become further grave. The native was blessed with a male child in the sub-period of Jupiter. The child is retarded and a Mongolian child.
Female born 1st October, 1953, 1739 Hrs. 77E13 28N39 TZ 5.30 Hours.
The planets the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn are in their state of infancy. Mars, lord of the second is in the sixth house along with the lord of the eight house, Venus. The lord of the seventh house is in the 5th house in close conjunction with the lord of the twelfth house. The lord of the sixth house is in the seventh house in close conjunction with the middle point of the seventh house. All indicating extreme afflictions to the significator of a happy married life.
Rahu aspects navamsa ascendant, Mercury, the lord of the seventh house of the main chart is in the twelfth house of the navamsa chart.
The chart pertains to a lady who is highly qualified professional and is having very strained marital relationship. Due to physical weakness of the husband signified by weak Mercury in close association of Saturn, the native was involved with a person of low status for gratification of senses. As Rahu is closely aspecting the Moon, the lady has also become addict to intoxication and treats her husband and other family members in a very shabby manner.
Female born 10th February, 1954, 0515 Hrs. 77E04 28N37 TZ 5.30 Hrs.
The strain in married life is due to lack of progeny. The lord of the fifth house is placed in the twelfth house, though in its own sign. The significator for male children is in the sixth house. The fifth house is occupied by the lord of the eighth house, the Moon, in close conjunction with the middle point of the house. The fifth house, its lord and significator are weak and severely afflicted. Venus, the lord of the house of fulfilment of desires, is weak due to being in the state of infancy.
In Sapthamsa the ascendant rises with sign Taurus, whose lord is weak. The significator for children, Jupiter is in the twelfth house. Mars the lord of the fifth house of the main chart is in the second house of Sapthamsa. The Sapthamsa ascendant and the Moon are aspected by Ketu.
Due to the weakness of planets becoming ruler and significators for children, the native could not be blessed with a child in the main period of Mars and sub-period of Rahu and Jupiter in the main period of Rahu. The native has been suggested performance of propitiatory measures for the afflicting planets and strengthening measures for the weak planets to augment the prospects of the fifth house. In such cases chances of birth of children, without the support of remedial measures are very few.
TIMING MARRIAGE
Finding suitable matches these days have become very difficult because most of the persons are following materialistic approach in life; people known to each other are scattered all over and have different educational and cultural backgrounds because of the job/business opportunities; the large distances involved; the women entering the fields of taking up jobs and managing business in pursuit of meeting the hard life of the day, for having financial independence and meeting unforeseen calamities of widowhood/divorce; etc. The approach to be followed has to take all these constraints into account. At the same time the approach is true to timing of all events whether it is marriage, birth of a child, purchase of a flat/plot, conveyance, starting a business, etc.
Whenever, somebody contacts an astrologer for timing of marriage, he/she fulfils the first and foremost requirement of this particular event and that is the 'Intention of marriage' which is one of the main factors in this regard apart from the native's being of marriageable age. The delay, if any, is attributable basically to the weakness of or afflictions to the determinants of marriage. Whether the horoscope promises a marriage or not, is also analysed. The important combinations for marriage hold good only if the participating planets do not suffer weakness and afflictions. However, for a more systematic study, we may follow an integrated approach:
1. The chart is cast correctly with navamsa and dasa/bhukti worked out.
2. The strength of the determinants of marriage is identified.
3. Which are the planets that are connected with the ascendant in navamsa by way of aspect/placement or are in kendra/trine to the navamsa ascendant. The study of navamsa, which is the division concerned for marriage, is the backbone of this analysis.
4. The planets that become significators for marriage after studying 2 and 3 above are identified.
5. The selection of sub-period lord that is auspiciously placed in navamsa with reference to the lagna and the study of transit influences.
6. The afflictions caused to the planets, becoming determinants, to be removed by propitiation of planets.
7. The weakness of the planets becoming determinants to be removed by providing them strength by way of use of Gemstones/Planetary Kavach, etc.
8. The success in causing the events during the sub-periods of weak determinant is ruled out because a planet which is weak lacks power to protect/promote the houses/ significations ruled by it.
9. The determinant planet with strength, bestows auspicious results. Analysing as above, propitiating the functional malefic planets, strengthening the weak planets and selecting a sub-period auspicious on account of its placement in navamsa indicates the fulfillment of the object and that results in the marriage being celebrated in the indicated sub-period.
The planetary afflictions responsible for creating inharmonious relations immediately after the marriage are also taken into consideration. The periods and remedies are suitably suggested. The individuals whose chart otherwise show disturbed rnarital relations, are guided to avoid the same by restraint and following of astrological remedial measures. So far as the role of astrological remedial measures is concerned, it is supreme. The indications of astrology prove helpful only if we are able to change the unfavorable influences and mitigate evils.
Now, there might be occasions when the exact birth data of the person concerned for whom the marriage or some other event is to be timed, is not available. In such cases, we may draw a Prasna chart together with navamsa and the particular divisional chart and then time the events with the help of sub-periods calculated as per longitudes of the Moon of the Prasna chart. This method has been tried a number of times and has given excellent results. Prasna Chart 6th March, 1988, 1143 Hrs. 77E13 28N39 TZ 5.30 Hrs. This is a case where the marriage of a girl aged 35 years was timed with the help of Prasna chart and fructified within the time indicated.
The following are some of the cases where marriages timed as per the above integrated approach fructified:
The author was approached for timing the marriage, which was being delayed in spite of the wishes of the parents for an early marriage. The lord of the seventh house is the Sun, who occupies the eleventh house in the state of old age. The depositor of the Sun is in the eighth house along with the sixth lord and Ketu.
In navamsa, Jupiter is lord of the ascendant and ascendant is occupied by the Moon and Ketu. The Sun occupies the trinal house in the navamsa. The significators for marriage can be Jupiter, the Sun, Venus and the Moon. The author was approached when the native was running the sub-period of Jupiter in the main period of Rahu. Due to the weakness of Jupiter the marriage was being delayed. Remedial measures for propitiating the afflicting planets Rahu, Ketu and the Moon and for strengthening of Jupiter were suggested. The marriage was fixed up thereafter and solemnised in the sub-period of Jupiter itself.
The author was contacted for timing the marriage of the native when she was running the main period of Mercury and sub-period of Venus. The marriage was being delayed.
Venus, the sub-period lord is in the debilitated navamsa and occupies navamsa ascendant in association of Ketu and Saturn. The weakness of Venus was the factor causing delay although it signified marriage in two ways i.e. by occupying second house in D-1 and ascendant in D-IX.
Let us see the other factors. The seventh lord aspects the seventh house in association with the Sun, the lord of the ninth house. The lord of the eighth house, ruling marital bond, is in the twelfth house in its sign of debilitation. The significator for husband Jupiter occupies fourth house in its own sign, Pisces. Rahu is in exact conjunction with the middle point of the seventh house. In navamsa many planets occupy angular houses. The native was suggested remedial measures for propitiating Rahu, and the Moon and for strengthening of Venus. The marriage of the native was solemnised in the sub-period of Venus Itself.
The lord of the second house is in the twelfth house in association with the significator for the husband. The seventh lord, whose mooltrikona sign is in the eighth house, is in the ninth house. The seventh house is aspected by the planets Mercury, Rahu and the Moon. Jupiter is combust. Venus is in its state of infancy and closely associated with Rahu.
In navamsa the Sun being lord of the second house of family in the rasi chart is in the twelfth house. The planets Moon, Venus, Mercury, Ketu & Rahu occupy angular houses in the navamsa.
The first marriage of the native, which was celebrated in the main period of Ketu could not survive. The sub-period of Venus in the main period of Venus was in operation when the author was approached for indicating the prospects of the second marriage. As Venus is occupying the ascendant in navamsa, its sub-period was considered to be fit for the second marriage. The propitiatory remedial measures for Rahu, Ketu, Mars and Jupiter were advised which helped in the celebration of the second marriage. For birth of children and harmonious marital life, strengthening of Venus and Sun were suggested later. The lady has been blessed with a male child and a female child. The couple is enjoying the married life happily.
The chart was cast for the time of the query for marriage of a female of 35 years of age who is somewhat ugly in appearance. In the prasana chart the lord of the fourth housesignifies the marriage. The significator for husband is placed in the twelfth house with the significator for sex, Venus. The fourth lord aspects the fourth house ruling peace of mind closely.
Navamsa ascendant was occupied by yogakaraka, Mars and the lord of the second house, Mercury. Jupiter and Venus occupied the tenth house of navamsa in Taurus. The Sun is exalted in the ninth house of navamsa. The subperiod of Venus was in progress in the main period of the Moon in the prasana chart. Sub-period of Venus, which occupies tenth house in its own sign in navamsa, and is significator for sex was considered good for her engagement during this period. The remedial measures for Rahu, Saturn and Ketu and for strengthening of Jupiter were suggested. The engagement of the girl was finalised in April, 1988, during the sub-period of Venus in the main period of the Moon. The marriage took place on the 22nd of June 1988. The system's approach now propounded will not recommend for strengthening of Jupiter. But in case of utter weakness of the planets as a last resort, sometimes, even a functional malefic planet might have to be strengthened for desired results.

PREDICTING THROUGH NAVAMSA - R.K. Shridhar (Jyotish Vachaspati (ICAS) Faculty Member)
It is the most important divisional chart, Navamsa means nine part of a particular Rashi in which each Amsa consists of 3 degrees and 20 minutes. For a planet posited in a Movable sign (Chara Rashi) counting starts from the sign itself, in fixed sign counting starts from 9th and in dual sign counting starts from 5th from where the planet is posited. Planets in the first Navamsa division. Chara Rashi, 5th division in the fixed sign (Sthir Rashi) and 9th division in Dual Rashi are Vargottoma.
Importance of Navamasa
Navamsa is invariably necessary to be checked for each and every event to be delineated from the horoscope. According to Shastras, without Navamsa chart predictions are not ventured without anyalsing the position of planets in the Navamsa chart for a particular bhava and its representative. Sthoolam or apparent look is D-1 chart, Sukhsham Sharira is D-9 chart and it should have inherent permanent strength. If Sukhsham Sharira does not possesses strength one will always be liable for having loss the materalistic possessions he has. Any planet in its own Rashi placed in D-1 chart should go into its own Rashi, Mooltrikon sign, exaltation sign or great friend’s sign.
These are –
a) Rasi (D-1) – Each house is equivalent of a sign or 30 degrees;
b) Hora (D-2) – Half of a sign (15 degrees) is a Hora denoting wealth.
ANALYSIS OF HOROSCOPE FOR HEART DISEASE"
The medical astrology, which is a branch of astrology, is one of the various facets of the divine science of astrology for the benefit of the mankind and it is fully competent to answer our questions regarding health i.e. (1) to what type of diseases a native may be vulnerable to; (2) when; (3) whether it will respond to medical treatment; and (4) preventive measures. The analysis based on Systems’ Approach clearly indicates the status of health. The health is one of the various aspects of life and heart disease is a part thereof. The natal chart of a person can indicate whether a person is likely to have a heart disease and if so, at what age. For detailed study of the status of health, the readers may refer to my book, “MANAGE YOUR HEALTH THROUGH PREVENTIVE ASTRAL REMEDIES”.
First of all we identify the planets. The lord of the ascendant and/or the lord of the sixth house containing a mooltrikona sign is/are the prime indicators of health. The lord of the fourth house is the secondary indicator so far as the heart disease is concerned. The planets, the Sun and the Moon are the primary and secondary significators for a heart disease, respectively. The Moon governs the blood and represents all functions in human body. Other contributory planets are Mars, ruling the muscular parts, and Jupiter, governing the arteries.
If the prime indicators and/or the fourth house containing a mooltrikona sign are weak and the most effective points of the first, sixth and/or fourth houses are afflicted, the person would be vulnerable to a heart disease.
Since the Moon and Mercury are weak quite often and, in case of Aries rising, the Moon becomes secondary indicator/significator for heart condition and Mercury becomes prime indicator of health, it makes Arians vulnerable to heart problems if Mars too is weak. Such natives would better use preventive astral remedies to take care.
EXAMINING THE OPERATIONAL PLANETS
The close conjunction/aspect of the functional malefic planets with the weak prime indicator(s) of health and/or the primary or secondary significators for a heart disease will indicate the heart disease in the operational sub-periods of the functional malefic planets in the periods of weak prime indicator(s) and/or weak significators at an early stage of life. The indications of the timing are given also by the operating sub-periods of weak and afflicted prime indicators of health and/or weak and afflicted primary or secondary significators.
The involvement of Mars as functional malefic planet, the lord of the sixth house ruling injuries and Ketu create the eventualities for operations and the absence of their involvement enables the native to respond to symptomatic treatment.
The effect of the triple transit triggering influence of malefics is seen over the natal/transit weak indicators meticulously to forewarn the person.
Let us study the matter further through some case studies:
CHART 9: Male born 28th November, 1928, 2120 Hrs.
The sign Cancer rises in the ascendant which means that besides Rahu and Ketu, Jupiter and Saturn become also functional malefic planets. Rahu, Ketu and Jupiter are close to the most effective point of the houses of their location and afflict all the houses occupied and aspected, including the most effective points of the first and fourth houses. One prime indicator of health and secondary significator for a heart disease, the Moon, is weak due to bad placement, infancy and the most effective point of its mooltrikona house being exactly afflicted by Ketu. The Moon becomes additionally weak for being closely afflicted by the most malefic planet, Saturn. The other prime indicator of health, Jupiter, is weak as its dispositor is weak and the most effective point of its house of placement is exactly afflicted by itself. The secondary indicator, Venus, is weak as it is badly placed, its dispositor is weak and the most effective point of its mooltrikona house is exactly afflicted by Jupiter. The significator of heart, the Sun, is weak as the most effective points of its mooltrikona house and house of placement are exactly afflicted by Jupiter and Rahu-Ketu axis, respectively. In view of the weakness of the first and fourth houses and exact afflictions to the most effective points of these houses, the native suffered from malfunctioning of heart for a number of years and in the sub-period of the lord of the sixth house and the main period of the lord of the eighth house underwent a by-pass surgery. In this case, the exact aspect of Jupiter to the most effective point of the sixth house is a saving factor as it is the mooltrikona house of Jupiter. The sixth house rules diseases and the eighth house rules obstructions/death/death like sufferings. The native was suggested propitiatory remedial measures for the afflicting planets and strengthening measures for the weak planets.
CHART 10: Male born 29th August, 1948, 2330 Hrs.
The sign Taurus rises in the ascendant which means that besides Rahu and Ketu, Venus, Jupiter and Mars become also functional malefic planets. Mars is weak as it is badly placed, is in infancy and its dispositor is weak. Mars is additionally weak as its mooltrikona house and house of placement are both closely afflicted by the Rahu-Ketu axis. Rahu and Ketu are close to the most effective point of the houses of their location and afflict all the houses occupied and aspected, including the most effective points of the fourth and sixth houses. The primary significator and secondary indicator, the Sun, is exactly afflicted by Rahu from the twelfth house. The Moon is weak as it lacks full luster i.e. it is less than 72 degrees away from the Sun. The Moon is additionally weak as the most effective point of its house of placement is closely afflicted by Ketu from the sixth house. Venus, ruling the sixth house and becoming the prime indicator, is weak as it is in old-age. Venus is additionally weak as its mooltrikona house is closely afflicted by the Rahu-Ketu axis. Saturn, placed in the fourth house, is weak as it is combust, in infancy and its dispositor is weak. Saturn becomes additionally weak as the most effective points of its mooltrikona house and house of placement are closely afflicted by Ketu and Rahu, respectively, and both from malefic houses. Whenever a functional malefic planet afflicts another planet/house from a malefic house its impact is further aggravated. During the sub-period of Venus, ruling the afflicted sixth house, and in the main period of Saturn, the native suffered a massive heart attack and died within a few minutes.
CHART 11: Male born 13th December, 1944, 1455 Hrs.
The sign Aries rises in the ascendant which means that besides Rahu and Ketu, Mercury becomes also a functional malefic planet. Mars is weak as it is combust and badly placed. Mercury is weak as its dispositor is weak. Jupiter is weak as it is badly placed, in infancy and debilitated in navamsa. The Moon is weak as it is badly placed, debilitated, in infancy and lacks full luster. The Sun is weak as it is badly placed and in old-age. The prime indicators, Mars and Mercury; the secondary indicator, the Moon, and the significators the Sun and the Moon are all weak. During the main period of the functional malefic planet, Ketu, and the sub-period of the functional malefic planet, Mercury, the native suffered from heart problem and underwent open heart surgery in the beginning of the main period of Venus.
TEN PRIMARY GEM CHOOSING METHODS
compiled by Richard S. Brown
PLANET ——GEMSTONE——-GOD/GODDESS
Sun ———–Ruby————— Lord Shiva
Moon———- Pearl ————– Lord Shiva/Parvathi/DurgaMa
Mars———- Coral————— Hanuman/ Kartikeya/Subramanya/Narasimha swamy
Mercury——- Emerald———– Vishnu/Parvathi
Jupiter——– Yellow-Sapphire —–Lord Shiva/Lord Brahma
Venus ——–Diamond ————- Lord Lakshmi/ DurgaMa
Saturn——- Blue-Sapphire ——– Lord Shani /Hanuman/Shiva
Rahu——- Gomed —————- Lord Hanuman/Lord shiva/ Subramanya
Ketu——— Cat’s eye ————-Ganesha/Bhairav
After a lot of interaction with different members of the PGA we have identified TEN PRIMARY GEM CHOOSING METHODS:
1) Lagna Lord's gem method for improving health (Example: If Lagna is Leo, a sign ruled by Sun, the gem would be ruby or other Sun gems like red spinel or red garnet),
---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' (strong) position, otherwise not.
---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' (weak) position.
2) Moon Rasi Lord's gem method (Example: If Moon is in Virgo, a sign ruled by Mercury, then the gem would be emerald or another Mercury gem like tsavorite or green tourmaline);
11th lord=med placed in 5th house. and under aspect of jupiter, so the native cane use panna/emerald for gains.

RISING SIGN (Lagna)
RULING PLANET
GEMSTONE
Sign RULING PLANET GEMSTONE
Aries Mars Red Coral
Taurus Venus Diamond
Gemini Mercury Emerald
Cancer Moon Pearl
Leo Sun Ruby
Virgo Mercury Emerald
Libra Venus Diamond
Scorpio Mars Coral
Sagittarius Jupiter Yellow Sapphire
Capricorn Saturn Blue Sapphire
Aquarius Saturn Blue Sapphire
Pisces Jupiter Yellow Sapphire
Each major planetary period follows a certain order and is of a fixed period of time - this information is given as follows:
SUN PERIOD: 6 years
MOON PERIOD: 10 years
MARS PERIOD: 7 years
RAHU PERIOD: 18 years
JUPITER PERIOD: 16 years
SATURN PERIOD: 19 years
MERCURY PERIOD: 17 years
KETU PERIOD: 7 years
VENUS PERIOD: 20 years
Depending on the period in operation when one is born, the soul will pick up the periods and pass through them in succession in the order given above.

Following is a list of the 27 constellations, their rulingplanet and corresponding gemstone:
